The Punjab government has launched the Punjab Free Solar Scheme 2024, a significant initiative aimed at providing free solar systems to households across the province.

This program is part of a broader strategy to ease financial burdens on vulnerable communities in the face of rising electricity prices in Pakistan.

Key Features

  • Cost and Beneficiaries: The scheme, with a budget of Rs 10 billion, aims to benefit 50,000 families by providing them with free solar systems, offering substantial relief to those struggling with high electricity costs.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Electricity Consumption: Only households consuming up to 100 units of electricity per month are eligible.
  • Exclusions: Families engaged in electricity theft or illegal activities related to electricity usage will be disqualified.

Verification Process

  1. Data Collection: Electricity consumption data for eligible households will be collected and forwarded to the National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC).
  2. Verification: The NTC will verify the data and pass it to the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB).
  3. Distribution: Verified families will receive solar systems through their district administrations.

Registration Process

  • SMS Registration: Eligible families can register by sending their electricity bill reference number and CNIC to 8800.
  • Verification and Notification: After SMS registration, details will be verified, and applicants will be notified of the results and further steps.

Significance
