WhatsApp, the messaging platform owned by Meta, has enhanced its security services with the latest update tailored for Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro users. This update introduces the Face Unlock feature for WhatsApp, alongside the existing Face Unlock feature used for payments. Previously, Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro users could only utilize the fingerprint unlock option for WhatsApp, but now they have the added convenience of face support unlock.

Moreover, the Pixel 8 App Lock feature has been integrated to bolster user privacy and security. The Face Unlock upgrade for Pixel 8 devices aligns with Android’s highest biometric standard level, classified as Class 3. Google attributes this enhancement to advanced machine learning (ML) algorithms and Tensor G3 technology.

The rollout of Face Unlock for Pixel 8 coincides with WhatsApp version 2.23.8.85, although there is also a server-side component involved in the update process. This new feature mandates biometric authentication before revealing messages. Upon launching the app, a system face unlock sheet will appear at the bottom of the screen, indicating recognition through a ring around the Pixel 8 front camera. In cases where the feature fails to recognize the face or if the face isn’t visible, the interface will revert to Pixel 8’s fingerprint prompts after a short delay, ensuring seamless access to the messaging app.
