2024 Total Solar Eclipse: Mexico, US, and Canada await celestial event

  • The Moon will completely cover the Sun, providing opportunities for photo capture.
  • The event will darken the horizon and reveal hidden stars.
  • The eclipse will occur in various states, with some seeing partial eclipses and others in its entirety.

Today, the Total Solar Eclipse of 2024 will grace Earth’s skies, captivating millions with its celestial spectacle. Dubbed the Great American Eclipse Part II, this long-awaited event will unfold as Mexico marks its starting point, with North America and Canada awaiting its arrival.

People fortunate enough to be in the path of totality will observe the Moon completely covering the Sun, offering them perfect opportunities to capture photos. This event will darken the horizon and unveil stars hidden in the outer atmosphere. While some will witness a partial Total Solar Eclipse, others will experience it in its entirety. Nonetheless, every state will have the opportunity to witness this celestial event.

During a Total Solar Eclipse, the Moon passes directly between the Sun and Earth, causing a significant shadow to be cast on the planet, home to millions of humans.

Wondering about when can you see the eclipse? Here’s the US time:

Total Solar Eclipse 2024:

3:07pm GMT — Solar Eclipse is about to take place in New York:

Residents of New York City will partially see the eclipse just after 2pm on Monday, even though the city is not on the path of totality. Weather experts suggest chances of rain in the areas where the total eclipse will occur, including Texas, Oklahoma, southern Arkansas, Ohio, northwestern Pennsylvania, and western New York.

3:05pm GMT — Washington state to witness grand event:

Even though Washington state is not in the path of totality for the upcoming Solar Eclipse on April 8, we will still observe the Moon covering a portion of the Sun from our perspective. A Solar Eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth, blocking some or all of the light cast on the Earth’s surface for a brief period of time.

3:03pm GMT — Solar Eclipse in California can be seen here:

On Monday, millions of people in the US will glance up at the sky together, hopefully donning the appropriate safety goggles, to witness a unique Total Solar Eclipse. Although California won’t experience the totality phenomenon, according to the Los Angeles Times, there’s still plenty to see.

2:36pm GMT — This is best place to see Total Solar Eclipse:

Visitors to the Amistad National Recreation Area in South Texas, one of the few National Park Service locations directly in the path of totality, will have the opportunity to witness the Total Solar Eclipse before the majority of the country due to its proximity to the US-Mexico border. To secure a position, people began camping out days in advance.

12:51pm GMT — Eid al-Fitr moon sighting to be affected by Total Solar Eclipse:

On Monday, April 8, people in North America will have the opportunity to observe the new moon’s silhouette using eclipse glasses. However, the entire eclipse will only be visible without assistance along a 115-mile-wide path of totality. This year’s Shawwal crescent moon visibility will be influenced by the Total Solar Eclipse on Monday, April 8. The National reported that the last day to see the crescent moon will be the 30th day of Ramadan, April 9. Astronomers initially predicted that April 9 would mark the first day of Eid al-Fitr.

12:25pm GMT — This is how Solar Eclipse affects animals:

According to a report by The US Sun, a scientist working for NASA has stated that animals exhibit different behaviors during events like the upcoming total solar eclipse expected on April 8, 2024. The eclipse, scheduled for April 8, will not only involve the Moon but also witness various animals engaging in different activities. For example, NASA heliophysicist David Cheney mentioned that animals display unusual behavior during both total and annular eclipses.

11:48am GMT — How is Total Solar Eclipse 2024 is different than 2017?

Astronomers are quick to remind us that these celestial events aren’t exactly alike, as it has been seven years since a Total Solar Eclipse traced a path over the US. While the 2017 eclipse began in Oregon and ended in South Carolina, this year’s eclipse will move in the opposite direction, starting in Texas and covering more ground, according to news. Additionally, more people will be able to witness the 2024 eclipse because the path of totality, where the moon’s shadow completely covers the sun, will be wider.
