Weather update; Cold wave strengthens in Karachi

Karachi experiences cold wave after heavy rainfall

Karachi, Pakistan’s vibrant urban center, is presently in the grip of a cold spell.

The city has experienced a significant drop in temperature, plummeting by 4°C, reaching a minimum of 14.5°C on Saturday.

According to the city’s Chief Meteorologist, Sardar Sarfaraz, this cold and arid weather pattern is anticipated to persist until Monday, March 4.

This cold wave was instigated by heavy rainfall and thunderstorms that swept through the city on Friday, affecting various areas including II Chundrigar Road, Saddar, Sarjani Town, Malir, North Karachi, Korangi Industrial Area, Orangi Town, Baldia Town, Manghopir, Northern Bypass, and Sohrab Goth Town.

Sarfaraz remarked on the unusual nature of this cold wave for March, a month typically devoid of such chilly conditions.

He cited historical records showing the city’s lowest temperature of 7°C, observed on March 7, 8, and 9 in 1979.

Weather expert Jawad Memon noted the absence of rain forecasts in the foreseeable future as westerly waves have dissipated, predicting clear, dry skies with cold nights.

Although the unseasonal cold wave is expected to be short-lived, winds from Quetta are anticipated to persist at speeds of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour for a few more days.
