During Ramadan in the UAE, it is mandatory to change your daily routine. Here are some adjustments that happen during this period.
When is Ramadan in the UAE?
The official date will only be confirmed once the UAE’s moonsighting committee sights the crescent moon next month. However, astronomical forecasts indicate that it is likely to occur on March 11, 2024.
How Ramadan affects working hours
Ramadan also affects the working hours for offices, malls, restaurants and paid parking. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect:
- Private sector offices
Working hours are reduced by two hours during Ramadan, according to Article 15 (2) of ‘Cabinet Resolution No. 1 of 2022 on the implementation of Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021’.
According to the UAE government’s official website – u.ae, non-Muslim workers are also entitled to reduced working hours during Ramadan without a pay cut.
- Opening hours of restaurants
According to UAE customs, many restaurants observe fasting hours during Ramadan. They remain closed during the daytime and reopen after evening prayers. However, some restaurants and cafes operate during the day, allowing people to order food for delivery, take away, or dine in within designated areas.

- Opening hours of grocery shops and malls
Supermarkets and grocery shops are open as usual. Malls stay open until late night.
- Parking timings
During Ramadan, there are changes in the hours and fees for paid public parking. Details regarding parking timings, fees, and payment methods are displayed on parking meters in respective areas. In Dubai, for instance, paid public parking hours during Ramadan are from 8 am to 6 pm and from 8 pm to 12 midnight, as specified by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of the emirate. Specifics for other emirates will be announced closer to the start of Ramadan.
- Availability of taxis
As per UAE, while taxis in the UAE operate round-the-clock, it can be challenging to flag one down directly from the road during the evenings, as many drivers may be breaking their fast. It is advisable to pre-book a taxi using ride-sharing apps such as Careem, Hala Taxi, or Uber.
