Police have arrested three suspects in connection with a shooting in Missouri after the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory parade, which resulted in one fatality and 21 people wounded. Officials treated eight victims with immediately life-threatening injuries and seven others with injuries that could potentially prove life-threatening. Among the wounded were nine children, all of whom are expected to recover.
During a news conference on Wednesday, Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves announced that gunfire struck a total of 22 people, resulting in one fatality, and law enforcement arrested three individuals.
Ms. Graves stated that over 800 police officers were already present to monitor the parade and responded promptly when the gunshots erupted. Detectives at the scene initiated an investigation swiftly. Additionally, the fire brigade provided aid to the injured. A local radio station reported the death of one of its DJs, Lisa Lopez, in the shooting.
Officials reported that they transported the surviving victims to three local hospitals, ensuring that immediate life-threatening cases reached the hospital within 10 minutes of the shooting.
Chief nursing officer:
Chief nursing officer Stephanie Meyer stated that Children’s Mercy Hospital is treating nine children aged six to 15 with gunshot wounds.
“The one word I would just use to describe what we saw and how they felt when they came to us was fear,” Ms Meyer added.
Local hospitals confirmed that they were treating individuals who sustained injuries not related to gunshot wounds but resulted from the sudden stampede that ensued after the shooting.
City officials refrained from disclosing the names of any victims or sharing details about the arrested suspects, including potential motives behind the shooting. Police Chief Graves stated that the motive for the shooting remained unclear at the time.
A law enforcement source informed the private news channel that the shooting seemed to stem from an argument that escalated into violence, clarifying that it was not related to terrorism.
The gunfire erupted west of Union Station, the downtown Kansas City train station, where the parade concluded around 14:00 local time (20:00 GMT), attracting thousands of fans. Police stated they were investigating the motive and collecting physical and digital evidence.
