LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday dismissed Chaudhry Pervaiz’s petition, where he sought the ‘Peacock’ as his election symbol. The court upheld the decision of the election commission, which had assigned the ‘donkey cart’ as Pervaiz Elahi’s election symbol.
Pervaiz Elahi, a former chief minister of Punjab and PTI leader, had filed a petition in the LHC, requesting a review of the election symbol assigned to him and urging for the ‘peacock’ symbol.
Last Friday, the Supreme Court of Pakistan granted permission for Pervaiz Elahi to participate in the February 8 elections. A three-member SC bench, led by Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, permitted the PTI leader to contest the general election from the PP-32 constituency in the Gujarat district.
In his petition to the Supreme Court, Pervaiz Elahi had named the election commission and the appellate tribunal as respondents. He sought the court’s declaration of the Lahore High Court’s decision on January 13, 2024, as void.
The high court had dismissed his appeal regarding the rejection of his nomination papers by the returning officer. Pervaiz Elahi then contested this decision in the election appellate tribunal, where his appeal was also dismissed.
Pervaiz Elahi is among several PTI leaders and supporters who have faced arrests in the crackdown on PTI leadership following the violent unrest in the country after the initial arrest of Imran Khan on May 9.
