ISLAMABAD: After the resignation of Omar Hamid, a new Secretary for the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has been appointed in preparation for the upcoming general elections in 2024.
Dr. Syed Asif Hussain has officially assumed the role of Secretary at the ECP, according to an official notification. Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja, in his capacity, appointed Asif Hussain, a 22nd-grade officer, to serve as the Secretary of the ECP for a one-year term.
This development followed the approval of Omar Hamid’s resignation as the Secretary of the Election Commission of Pakistan. Initially, the Commission had denied reports regarding Omar Hamid’s resignation. The series of events unfolded as the Election Commission finalized preparations for the upcoming polling for the National and Provincial assemblies scheduled for the next month.
ECP Spokesperson Syed Nadeem Haider, in an interview with state-run TV, encouraged the general public to exercise their right to vote on polling day.
The spokesperson informed that election symbols have been assigned to the contesting candidates, and the printing of ballot papers is set to commence. Furthermore, Syed Nadeem Haider emphasized that monitoring cells have been established at the provincial level and at the ECP Secretariat in Islamabad to ensure the effective implementation of the election Code of Conduct.
