ISLAMABAD: There is a new resolution in the Senate of Pakistan to delay the 2024 general election by three months, citing security concerns.
Senator Hidayatullah, a member of the Independent Parliamentary Group in Pakistan’s upper house, has put forward the resolution, expressing worry about the increasing attacks on candidates intending to participate in the upcoming election.
The resolution calls for a three-month postponement and urges the Election Commission of Pakistan and the Supreme Court to ensure a peaceful electoral process.
It is noteworthy that earlier this month, the Upper House of Parliament passed a resolution, introduced by independent Senator Dilawar Khan in a session with only 15 lawmakers present. The resolution sought a delay in the polls due to extreme weather conditions in hilly areas and a worsening security situation.
The resolution emphasized the constitutional right to vote for every Pakistani citizen and emphasized the Election Commission’s responsibility to conduct free and fair elections, promoting inclusivity and the participation of all regional residents.
“The vote turnout in colder areas remains notably high during moderate weather conditions. January and February are recognized as the coldest months in the majority of areas in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa,” the resolution stated. It also highlighted that several political parties had expressed concerns about the challenges of ensuring participation in cold regions during the electoral process.
