Rocker David Bowie’s recalled late-night meeting with John Cameron

John Cameron Mitchell will pay homage to David Bowie in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Mitchell is best known for his 1998 stage musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

John Cameron Mitchell is an American actor, playwright, screenwriter, and director. Best known as the writer, director, and star of the 2001 film Hedwig and the Angry Inch, he portrayed the role of Joe Exotic.

Mitchell, best famous for making the 2001 film version of his 1998 stage musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch, drew a cue from Bowie when it came to giving Hedwig life as a glam rocker evocative of Bowie’s alter ego Ziggy Stardust.

He will now pay tribute to the late English singer-songwriter once more when Blackstar Symphony, The Music of David Bowie has its global debut in Charlotte, North Carolina, on September 16 and 17. The performance will feature songs from Bowie’s final album. In the two-night production, Mitchell will appear as a guest.

He tells people, “This is a no-brainer,” adding that Blackstar served as a sort of “memorial” or “mausoleum” constructed by the late Bowie himself. The track was released two days before Bowie passed away from liver cancer in January 2016 on his 69th birthday.

Although Bowie and Mitchell have a special bond, they have only ever met once, shortly after the singer watched a late 1990s Off-Broadway performance of Mitchell’s play Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

Mitchell says, “Thank God I didn’t know he was there until after — and he didn’t come up to the dressing room, so [we assumed] maybe he disliked it.

The first openly transgender vocalist in rock, Jayne County, was among Bowie’s friends who were present that night. “It was only later — my boyfriend was working at Complete Music Studios, where Bowie would rehearse — and I think he told me to come on over because he was there, and late photographer Mick Rock was there, too,” explains Mitchell.

“John, you got it right, David sort of swiveled his lighthouse grin toward me and remarked. I thought, “Wow, I can die now,” “Mitchell says.

As excited as the audience is for Hocus Pocus 2, Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker all have different ideas for a potential third film.

In their interview with Entertainment Weekly on Tuesday, Najimy, 65, first declared, “I feel like we’re done.” We have gotten every narrative out of this that is possible.

The Sister Act actress then appeared to retract a bit of what she had said. Never say never, I suppose, but Najimy said, “I feel grateful that we got to do it again.” “I don’t know that there are plans for a third one, but I know fans are dedicated to this film. I’m just happy we can bring this to them.”

Parker, 57, is on board with the new idea. She remarked, “Kathy had a great notion that the third one should be animated. “That would be a clever and cool idea. It’s enjoyable, hilarious, and intriguing, like both traditional and contemporary [animation].”

The City actress is generally opposed to making a third film. She replied, “Of course I’d be pleased to talk to you; it just depends on what Kathy and Bette want to do!”

Tuesday’s shareholder vote approved Elon Musk’s $44 billion offer to buy Twitter and take it private.

He questions Twitter’s self-reported percentage of bogus accounts and claims the business was not completely transparent in its explanation of how the calculation was made.

Twitter has maintained that fewer than 5% of monetizable daily active users are spam or false, and it claims to have given Musk all the information necessary to fulfil the terms of the agreement.

Twitter filed a lawsuit against Musk for allegedly breaking the terms of the deal, and the Delaware Court of Chancery is currently hearing the matter.

A trial is scheduled to start in the middle of October.

A former Twitter security head recently submitted a whistleblower complaint alleging gross securities violations by the company, and the court in the case recently allowed Musk’s team to alter their counterclaim against Twitter to include those claims.

Peiter “Mudge” Zatko, the whistleblower, gave testimony earlier on Tuesday before a Senate committee.

Google, Meta penalized over privacy violations by South Korea

According to regulators, South Korea has penalized Google and Meta a total of more than $71 million for collecting customers’ personal information without their knowledge in order to deliver customized advertisements.

According to the Personal Information Protection Commission, investigations into the two US IT behemoths revealed that they had been “gathering and analyzing” information on their users and keeping tabs on how they were using their websites and applications.

It said that neither Google nor Meta had clearly disclosed this practice to South Korean consumers or gotten their prior agreement.

Instead, it claimed that the data was used to “infer the users’ interests or used for customized online adverts”.

Google and Meta each received fines of 69.2 billion won ($49.7 million) and 30.8 billion won ($22.1 million), respectively.

The commission declared in a statement that the fine was “the greatest for a violation of the Personal Information Protection Act.”

Regulators claimed that the majority of South Korean users — 82% for Google and 98% for Meta — had unintentionally permitted companies to collect information about their internet behavior.

The statement stated that “it may be said that the probability and risk of infringing on users’ rights are significant.”

For abusing its control in the mobile operating system and app marketplaces last year, South Korea fined Google about $180 million, claiming it was undermining market competition.

Massive US technology giants are frequently criticized for edging away competitors to dominate markets, and numerous governments throughout the world are working to curb them in.

The European Union has targeted Apple and Microsoft in addition to punishing Google with historically high antitrust fines.
