Hascol earnings clock-in at Rs1.35b in 2021

KARACHI: Hascol posted positive earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) of Rs1.35 billion during the year ended December, 2021.

The company recorded negative EBITDA of Rs11.77 billion during the previous year.

Despite the non-availability of working capital lines from banks, the credit support from the company’s single majority shareholder, Vitol, has played a vital role in this achievement, the company said in a statement.

“The core management has worked tirelessly under the active guidance from the board of directors to ensure that the company’s financial statements have been prepared and presented in a way that gives a true and fair view of the affairs of the company,” it added.

Hascol is encouraged by some recent decisions made by the government to increase regulated margins, something which significantly improves the potential profitability of the sector. Any proposed deregulation will bring about a dynamic change to the sector and widespread benefits.

The company also announced the appointment of a new chief executive officer and chief finance officer and expressed hope that over the next few months Hascol will be put on a sound footing for the years to come.

Kia Sportage and competitors’ 2021 vs 2022 price comparison

Kia Sportage and competitors
  • Kia Sportage has long been a top performer in its market.
  • Industry experts predict that sales will continue to drop in the future.
  • This is happening as a result of catastrophic inflation and a production halt.

The recent price reductions followed by the most recent price hikes have changed the face of the Pakistani auto sector.

Particularly C-segment crossovers have seen a sharp price increase and have evolved into specialist goods.

The Kia Sportage has long been a top performer in its market, with affordability being one of its defining characteristics. It is now far away from the inexpensive crossover it once was, which also applies to its rivals.

The price increases for Sportage and its rivals since August 2021 (or the time of debut) are as follows:

Widespread Problem

As a result of a delay in the letter of credit (LC) approval for the CKD imports, HACL, Toyota Indus Motor Company (IMC), Pak Suzuki Motor Company (PSMC), and Kia Lucky Motor Corporation (KLMC) announced non-production days earlier this month.

Additionally, the most recent information from the Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers’ Association (PAMA) revealed a sharp fall in sales in July 2022.

PSMC, IMC, and HACL had a sharp decline in sales last month, while Hyundai Nishat Motor Company Limited (HNMPL) failed to sell even one Elantra or Sonata.

Due to catastrophic inflation, price increases, and recurrent production halts, industry experts predict that sales will continue to drop in the future.

New technology allows Wi-Fi signals to pass through walls

Wi-Fi signals to pass through walls
  • Now Wi-Fi signals can pass straight through walls without reflecting.
  • Researchers employed a unique coating that enables Wi-Fi radio signals to pass through solid objects like walls.
  • This technique will also be helpful in the 6G mobile communications system.

Researchers at Rennes University and Vienna University of Technology in Austria demonstrated that microwave signals can pass straight through walls without reflecting.

It was referred to as an “Anti-reflection structure for perfect transmission through complicated media” in the study papers the scientists made public.

“You can think of it like the anti-reflective coating on glass,” stated Professor Stefan Rotter of Vienna University of Technology.

The researchers employed a unique coating that enables Wi-Fi radio signals to pass through solid objects like walls.

This coating will permit light to enter the lens while preventing bouncing. Stronger Wi-Fi connections will result from this.

Experiment

One of the writers from Vienna University, Michael Horodynski, stated: “You must first simply transmit some waves through the medium and measure precisely how these waves are reflected by the material.”

“With this knowledge, we were able to demonstrate that a comparable compensatory medium can be determined for any medium that scatters waves in a complex fashion, allowing the wave to pass fully when the two media are combined.”

In the first experiment, researchers used microwaves to pass through a waveguide made of metal and Teflon that included tiny metal and Teflon objects.

The results revealed that only half of the microwaves were transmitted and the other half were reflected.

Later, researchers used waveguides to observe the microwaves’ behavior and developed an anti-reflective zone.

As a result, all microwaves were able to pass through the objects.

Applications

The method benefits other fields in addition to improving Wi-Fi. It aided in the observation of distant objects in space by digital telescopes and other radio-emitting instruments.

This technique will also be helpful in the 6G mobile communications system, the upcoming generation.

Apple to produce iPhone 14 in India

Apple to produce iPhone 14 in India
  • Apple is looking to increase production in India for the iPhone 14.
  • The first iPhones would be produced in India in late October or early November.
  • Apple will also begin manufacturing the Apple Watch and numerous MacBook Pros in Vietnam this year.

As China battles with lockdowns throughout numerous cities and has disagreements with Washington, Apple is exploring alternatives for the manufacture of the iPhone 14. According to a recent article on an international tech website, the Cupertino behemoth is now focused on India.

According to the source, Apple has been attempting to increase production in India in order to reduce the manufacturing delay for new iPhones from the customary six to nine months for past launches.

According to the article, one of Apple’s major suppliers, Foxconn, has already researched how to transfer components from China to India for the iPhone 14’s assembly.

According to reports, these phones would be made somewhere other than Chennai, in southern India.

It’s anticipated that the first few iPhones would be produced in India in late October or early November of this year.

Given that the iPhone 14 series is anticipated to be on sale as early as September, this could indicate a delay in both shipment and sales.

For a while now, Apple has been attempting to move some of its iPhone manufacturers outside of China. As the second-largest smartphone market in the world and a location where part of its iPads will be made, India was chosen as the location for this.

Samsung and Apple have historically chosen markets like Vietnam for their smartphones, but as contract manufacturers supplying American brands try to diversify their manufacturing away from China, India, and Mexico are also starting to become more significant.

Another publication also revealed a week ago that for the first time, Apple will assemble the Apple Watch and numerous MacBooks in Vietnam.

The 14- and 16-inch M2 MacBook Pros from Apple will go into commercial production in Q4 of 2022, claims renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
