Next UK prime minister faces winter of painful public sector strikes

  • Millions of public sector workers angry that their pay is falling further behind inflation. Unions canvassing members, including teachers, nurses and civil servants about a walkout.
  • Summer of discontent now appears set to last the rest of the year after series of strikes.
  • Teacher unions are consulting with members about possible strike action. Civil service unions and the Royal College of Nursing are also on board.

The next prime minister of the United Kingdom will inherit the worst relations with unions and workers since the 1970s, with millions of public sector workers angry that their pay is falling further behind inflation.

Discontent among government employees is likely to be Boris Johnson’s most immediate legacy, regardless of whether Foreign Secretary Liz Truss or former Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak wins the election in early September.

The pay settlements for 2.5 million British public sector workers announced last week sparked outrage. The government’s offer was almost always lower than the rate of inflation. Unions are now canvassing members, including teachers, nurses, and civil servants, about a walkout in protest this autumn.

This follows the devastating rail strikes that brought London to a halt in June. The summer of discontent, marked by waves of striking barristers and workers in formerly nationalised industries such as rail, mail, and telecommunications, now appears set to last the rest of the year.

There are even whispers among union officials of a “winter of discontent,” complete with Shakespearean overtones and memories of the rolling industrial action that brought down the Labour government and catapulted Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative Party to power in 1978 and 1979.

“I’ve never seen such rage,” said Kevin Rowan, head of organisation and services at the Trades Union Congress.

The most recent major public sector strike occurred in 2011 in response to pension reforms, when up to 2 million teachers, civil servants, National Health Service employees, and others went on strike for one day. “This is a bad time in terms of how people are feeling,” Mr Rowan said.

Wage growth across the economy is struggling to keep up with inflation, despite reaching a 40-year high of 9.4 percent. While some private-sector workers are receiving significant raises, particularly in hospitality and other trades where workers are in high demand, public-sector pay has lagged for more than a decade and is falling further behind.

STRIKES IN DETAIL
Which workers are set to strike this summer in the United Kingdom?

This has resulted in the greatest squeeze on consumer spending power in at least two decades, resulting in a cost-of-living crisis that research groups predict will result in more people falling into poverty. Traditional middle-class jobs are not immune.

Teacher unions, including principals, are consulting with members about possible strike action. Civil service unions and the Royal College of Nursing, whose General Secretary Pat Cullen welcomed “the growing public support, including over strike action,” are also on board.

According to Mr. Rowan, the number of consultations unions have with their members is extremely unusual. He anticipates that further ballots on whether to strike will be held in the coming weeks.

The UK public sector employs 5.5 million people (including local government and ancillary workers), accounting for approximately 15% of all workers in the economy.

Ballots and strike threats are frequently used to force employers to negotiate. For the time being, Ms Truss and Mr Sunak are both standing firm. They insist on the fairness of public sector contracts, with Ms Truss making a tough stance on trade unions a cornerstone of her bid to woo Tory members after reaching the final stage of the leadership election last week.

However, it may be difficult to maintain this stance in the face of growing public support for strike action. According to an Opinium poll, sympathy for strikers grew after 50,000 rail workers walked out in early June demanding better pay and terms.

“There has been a mood shift,” TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady told members of parliament last week. “We saw that with the public outpouring of support for some of the recent strikes.”

That support could be attributed to the elevated status of key workers in the national consciousness during the pandemic. Week after week, people across the country came out to “clap for carers” in hospitals and emergency services that cared for Covid-19 victims.

Nonetheless, the pressure on public sector workers is increasing, making them more important than ever. A total of 6.6 million patients are currently waiting for NHS treatment. There are also over 100,000 unfilled positions. According to the independent NHS Pay Review Body, anxiety, stress, and depression are on the rise, causing more problems with sickness rates and employee retention.

A similar story can be told about staff retention in education. Within five years, one-third of new teachers leave the profession. One way to boost morale is through pay.

“Pay isn’t everything, but it sure helps,” Ms O’Grady said.

Economic nonsense that keeps wages low

The trend towards weaker public sector pay has accelerated in the past five years, most starkly this year. The latest public sector settlements were for pay increases of about 5 per cent, which is below the 7.2 per cent private-sector average, according to the Office for National Statistics, and 4.4 per cent below inflation.

“To give you three examples, the TUC has calculated that since 2010 nurses are worse off in real terms by more than £5,000 ($6,013); porters by £2,500; and paramedics by £6,700,” said Ms O’Grady.

Aggravating the matter is the fact that government departments have been told to find savings of up to £2 billion to cover some of the pay rises. The next prime minister will be under pressure to borrow that additional money.

Then there is the argument that public sector pay restraint is needed to prevent a wage price spiral, but economists disagree. The Institute for Fiscal Studies said: “Fears of a ‘wage-price spiral’ in the public sector are overblown, given the fact that most public sector goods do not have market prices that can rise in response to higher wages.”

Health workers and teachers do not like striking, given the vital public service aspect of their roles, so it is possible that some of the disputes can be defused. But with anger rising, unwelcome echoes of the 1970s are growing louder, raising the risk of another era of industrial action and stagflation.

Higher prices boost Coca-Cola’s Q2 results

Coca-Cola
  • Coca-Cola posts better-than-expected quarterly profits, despite higher operating costs and the strong US dollar.
  • Net income fell to $1.9 billion, a 28 percent decline from the same period of last year.
  • Revenues rose 12 percent to $11.3 billion.

Higher prices for soda helped Coca-Cola score better-than-expected quarterly profits in spite of higher operating costs and the drag of the strong US dollar in international markets, the company announced Tuesday.

The soft drink brand benefited from a 12 percent increase in global pricing, with the biggest price increases in Europe/Middle East Africa, Latin America and North America.

An exception was Asia Pacific, where the company flagged China’s Covid-19 lockdowns as a weak area in spite of higher sales in India and the Philippines.

Coca-Cola executives have said they are monitoring the response to higher prices. When the company last reported results in April, executives said they had yet to see a meaningful pullback from consumers to the price changes made to that point.

Results also were boosted by resurgent sales in away-from-home venues such as entertainment and professional sports locales.

But the beverage giant pointed to a drag from higher operating costs and marketing spending compared to the prior year. The strong US dollar also dented revenues in overseas markets.

Net income fell to $1.9 billion, a 28 percent decline from the same period of last year, in part due to strong sales in the current quarter from goods with lower profit margins.

Revenues rose 12 percent to $11.3 billion.

“Our results this quarter reflect the agility of our business, the strength of our streamlined portfolio of brands, and the actions we’ve taken to execute for growth in the face of challenges in the operating and macroeconomic environment,” said Chief Executive James Quincey.

Coca-Cola shares climbed 1.1 percent to $62.87 in pre-market trading.

Human rights group seeks former Sri Lankan president’s arrest in Singapore

  • Complaint filed with Singapore’s attorney general seeking arrest of former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. He is accused of grave violations of the Geneva Conventions during the civil war.
  • The UN estimates that 100,000 people died in the conflict, but the true figure is much higher.
  • At least 40,000 ethnic minority Tamil civilians were killed in the final months of the fighting. Under the Rajapaksas, efforts to investigate allegations of war crimes were largely suppressed. Ranil Wickremesinghe has been sworn in as Sri Lanka’s new prime minister.

A human rights organisation has filed a criminal complaint with Singapore’s attorney general seeking the arrest of former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa for alleged war crimes.

Mr Rajapaksa, who fled to Singapore earlier this month after being removed from office due to Sri Lanka’s economic collapse, served as defence minister during the country’s civil war, which ended in 2009.

The International Truth and Justice Project (ITJP), an evidence-gathering organisation run by a non-profit foundation in South Africa, announced on Sunday that its lawyers had filed a complaint requesting his immediate arrest.

Mr Rajapaksa is accused of grave violations of the Geneva Conventions during the civil war, “and that these are crimes subject to domestic prosecution in Singapore under universal jurisdiction.”

The economic crisis in Sri Lanka has left the country’s 22 million people facing shortages of basic necessities such as medicine, fuel, and food.

Protests have centred on the Rajapaksa political dynasty, which has ruled the country for the majority of the last two decades.

“The government has collapsed due to the economic meltdown, but the crisis in Sri Lanka is really linked to structural impunity for serious international crimes dating back three decades or more,” said ITJP executive director Yasmin Sooka.

The UN estimates that 100,000 people died in the civil war, but the true figure is thought to be much higher.

According to a UN panel of experts, at least 40,000 ethnic minority Tamil civilians were killed in the final months of the fighting.

Tamil Tiger rebels fought to establish an independent state for Tamil ethnic minorities.

Mr Rajapaksa and his elder brother Mahinda Rajapaksa were credited with the war victory by the country’s ethnic Sinhala majority, cementing the family’s political dominance.

Under the Rajapaksas, efforts to investigate allegations of war crimes were largely suppressed.

As the new government in Sri Lanka cracks down on protests, a new prime minister is sworn in.
After Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the country earlier this month, politicians chose Ranil Wickremesinghe to complete his presidency.

He declared a state of emergency with broad powers to enforce law and order, and a day later, hundreds of armed troops raided a protest camp outside the president’s office, attacking demonstrators with batons.

Rights groups have urged Mr Wickremesinghe to immediately order troops and police to stop using force, claiming that last week’s demonstration appeared to follow a pattern of Sri Lankan authorities using force to suppress dissent.

Political unrest has jeopardised Sri Lanka’s economic recovery prospects.

Mr Wickremesinghe recently stated that bailout negotiations with the IMF were nearing completion.

More than 200 beagles arrive to Southern California after being rescued

  •  The dogs had never been outside of their cages or on grass before.
  • One female dog had letters tattooed inside her ear after she was forced to be bred and used for medical tests.

More than 200 beagles rescued from a Virginia lab have arrived in Southern California and will be available for adoption soon.

Priceless Pets, a volunteer rescue shelter in Chino Hills, welcomed the former dogs who had previously been caged and used for medical tests.

According to the Humane Society of the United States, approximately 4,000 beagles were rescued from a breeding company called Envigo RMS LLC, which sells the dogs to medical laboratory sites. The business is based in Virginia.

The majority of the dogs had never been outside of their cages or on grass.

“We were able to intercept them before they were tested. So we are thankful that they never had to go through all of that “On Monday, rescue spokesperson Ashlee Sprague told CBSLA Reporter Nicole Comstock.

Unfortunately, one female beagle was forced to endure breeding and branding. Inside her ear, she had letters tattooed.

But she no longer has to be concerned. In May, the Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against that breeding facility, alleging dozens of violations of animal welfare.

The company denied the allegations but announced that the facility would be closed and the dogs would be placed with the Humane Society.

“Animals are used in the testing of large corporations such as Proctor and Gamble, Tide, L’oreal, and Dawn. They are all testing on animals. So making better decisions when purchasing our products is the most effective way to assist “Sprague explained.

People can also help by providing loving homes for deserving dogs. The beagles in Chino Hills are all between the ages of one and five.

Despite everything the dogs have been through, they’re all as sweet as can be, according to Comstock.

“Their breed is incredible. Their disposition is excellent; they are usually good with children and other dogs, but these ones do have those requirements.” “Sprague explained. “They are fearful and timid. They have no idea what it’s like to be a dog, so they need adopters who can give them the time and patience they need to learn how to be a dog.”

Karnataka: India family pay $1,000 for missing parrot

  • A magnificent African Grey parrot named Rustoma escaped from his owners’ home in India. His family offered a 50,000 rupee ($1,065; £885) reward for his return.
  • When he was safely returned five days later, they paid rescuers more than the initial reward.
  • India is offering a monetary reward for the recovery of a missing bird. Two labourers discovered Rustoma just a day after he had left home.

Rio was overjoyed when her partner returned home after five days away that she kissed him on the cheek. Literally.

Rio’s companion is a magnificent African Grey parrot named Rustoma, who escaped from their home when a door was left open.

Rustoma’s disappearance made headlines when his distraught family in the southern Indian state of Karnataka offered a monetary reward to anyone who could locate him.

When Rustoma was safely returned five days later, his family was so grateful that they paid his rescuers 85,000 rupees ($1,065; £885) – a substantial sum that was higher than the reward they had initially announced.

The Shettys stated that they purchased the two parrots three years ago in Bangalore. It is not illegal to keep African Grey parrots as pets in India, but conservationists have frequently advocated for restrictions on exotic bird breeding and trading in India.

“We’ve always treated them as part of our family and have never believed in putting them in a cage,” says businessman Arjun Shetty.

He claims the birds enjoyed spending time with the family, particularly Mr Shetty’s seven-year-old son Vihan, and imitating the sounds they heard around them.

However, Rustoma flew out 10 days ago while the family was bringing in some furniture.

Rio refused to eat because she was distraught over her partner’s disappearance.

Mr Shetty claims he spent “considerable” money printing and distributing leaflets and posters with a photo of Rustoma, the family’s information, and the 50,000 rupee reward.

They hung the posters on various streets in Tumakuru, where they live. The family also paid for tuk-tuks to drive around with loudspeakers blasting Rustoma announcements.

During this time, Rustoma was only three kilometres (1.86 miles) away, being cared for by two labourers, Srinivas and Krishnamurthy.

Two labourers discovered Rustoma.
Krishnamurthy had discovered Rustoma just a day after he had left home; the bird was perched high in a tree, trying to avoid cats and dogs. Fear and hunger had made him look dull and exhausted.

Rustoma came willingly with Krishnamurthy, leaving him with Srinivas, who placed the bird in a cage and fed it.

Four days later, the men came across a handbill and contacted Mr Shetty. Then they realised the reward was even greater than what had been promised.

“We talked to a priest, who said Rustoma would be back in three days.” But he told us that if we increased the reward amount, it could be even sooner,” Mr Shetty says.

When he went to get Rustoma, the parrot was sitting inside his cage, looking glum.

“You should have seen how he reacted when he saw me. “He started making these very loud sounds that he makes whenever he is happy or excited,” Mr Shetty laughs.

Rio was overjoyed by Rustoma’s return more than the rest of the family.

India is offering a monetary reward for the recovery of a missing bird.
Rustoma and Rio were overjoyed to be reunited, and Mr Shetty says they will now keep a close eye on the birds. The family is now wondering if the birds would be happier in a larger environment, such as a zoo in India or abroad, as a result of Rustoma’s disappearance.

“Don’t parents send their children abroad to study and succeed in life?” “The children do not have to live with us,” he says.

“We are willing to stay away from them if they will be happier there.”

China’s ‘Silicon Valley’ tightens rules over Covid flare-up

China's 'Silicon Valley'
  • Shenzhen reports just 19 Covid cases as health officials say the risk of large-scale spread is low.
  • Foxconn, BYD, DJI, and ZTE are among the companies told to operate under a ‘closed loop’ production system.
  • China reported 976 covid cases on Tuesday.

China’s biggest tech hub is rushing to stamp out a fresh Covid outbreak, ordering some of the country’s biggest manufacturers to operate in a ‘closed loop’ to reduce infections, state media reported.

The city of Shenzhen, which borders Hong Kong, reported just 19 Covid cases Tuesday as the city’s health authority said the risk of “large-scale spread is low”.

But Beijing’s reluctance to budge from its strict zero-Covid policy had led to daily mass testing for the 13 million residents of Shenzhen for over a week and the closure of at least three subway stations by Tuesday.

Top manufacturers including iPhone maker Foxconn, electric carmaker BYD, drone maker DJI and telecom equipment maker ZTE are among the companies told to operate under a “closed-loop” production system.

It would restrict movement of employees for seven days, state-run business news site Yicai reported Monday.

The closed-loop operation mode involves control measures such as locking workers within a compound and conducting daily nucleic acid testing.

Bloomberg News reported Tuesday that a government notice told companies to reduce unnecessary interaction between non-manufacturing staff and factory floors to curb infection.

Health officials had earlier said all cases found in Shenzhen from July 15 were infected with the highly contagious Omicron subvariant BA.2.

While it is expensive and reduces the scale of production, manufacturers — including Tesla’s site south of Shanghai in the past — have opted to operate in a closed-loop instead of resorting to full shutdown during local Covid flareups.

Strict virus controls have threatened global supply chains and cooled China’s economy with Q2 growth coming in at a dismal 0.4 percent — the weakest growth since the pandemic started.

China reported 976 covid cases Tuesday, with the biggest outbreaks reported in the southern Guanxi region and Gansu province in the northwest.

Oil surges for a second day on supply constraint issues

Oil supply constraint issues
  • Oil prices rise for a second day after Gazprom halts gas flow through Nord Stream 1 pipeline.
  • A decrease in supplies will prevent countries from refueling natural gas reserves in time for winter.
  • The spread between the US WTI and the European Brent widened to $5 per barrel on Tuesday.

After Russia, a major energy provider to the area halted gas flow through a major pipeline, concerns about a tightening of the European supply led to an increase in oil prices on Tuesday for a second day.

By 10:29 GMT, Brent crude futures had increased by $1.14, or 1.1 percent, to $106.29 per barrel, building on the previous day’s gain of 1.9 percent.

After rising 2.1 percent on Monday, US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) oil futures jumped $1.31, or 1.4 percent, to $98.01 per barrel.

On Monday, Gazprom said that shipments through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline to Germany would reduce to just 20% of capacity, tightening Russia’s grip on Europe’s gas market.

The decrease in supplies will prevent countries from refueling natural gas reserves in time for the winter demand season. The biggest economy in Europe, Germany, may have to limit gas to the industry in order to keep its people warm over the winter.

According to Tamas Varga of oil brokerage PVM, “the news reignited suspicions that Russia, despite its disingenuous denial, will not hesitate to use its energy as a weapon in order to extract concessions in its fight against Ukraine and…Could possibly expect short-term success.”

While the Kremlin claims that gaps are the result of maintenance concerns and the impact of Western sanctions, the European Union has accused Russia of using energy blackmail on numerous occasions.

EU nations came to an emergency regulation agreement on Tuesday to reduce gas consumption during winter.

However, falling demand due to recent high crude and fuel prices and the expectation of an increase in interest rates in the United States have put pressure on prices. Western sanctions and payment disputes with Russia since its Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine have disrupted Europe’s crude, oil product, and gas supplies.

The completion of the US Federal Reserve’s policy meeting on Wednesday is largely anticipated to result in a 75 basis point increase in interest rates. That increase might lessen economic activity, which would affect the rise in fuel consumption.

The percentage of rate increases by central banks worldwide in the past six months has reached a 40-year high, according to Morgan Stanley, making this cycle of rate increases the most coordinated since the early 1980s.

The bank revised its predictions for this year and next year’s demand growth. Both Brent and WTI crude prices are predicted to be $10 per barrel in the third quarter, $20 less than their earlier predictions.

The difference between the US benchmark WTI and the European and international oil benchmark Brent has expanded to levels not seen since June 2019 as falling US gasoline demand weighs on US crude and tight supply supports Brent.

On Tuesday, prompt Brent inter-month spreads rose to $5 per barrel, the highest level in the previous three weeks. Prices in the front month are greater than prices in the following months in a backwardated market.

McDonald’s menu prices rise, yet sales rise

McDonald's menu prices rise
  • Sales at McDonald’s US locations that have been operational for at least 13 months increased 3.7 percent.
  • This growth was fueled by rising menu prices and “discount offerings”.
  • Customers who order through the McDonald’s app are also eligible for freebies.

Customers are embracing McDonald’s price increases on its menu. According to a report released on Tuesday by the firm, sales at McDonald’s US locations that have been operational for at least 13 months increased 3.7 percent.

According to McDonald’s, this growth was fueled by rising menu prices and “discount offerings” on its standard menu and through its app.

Restaurant chains have been hiking menu pricing as inflation surges due to both an increase in their own expenditures as well as the observation that customers are not yet hesitant to pay more.

Restaurants have been emphasizing value to offset increased pricing, whether it be more food for your money or an experience that justifies the cost.

Customers who order through the McDonald’s app and are members of the brand’s loyalty program are also eligible for some freebies from McDonald’s.

For instance, the business offered free fries to those customers earlier this month in observance of “National French Fry Day.” Mariah Carey and the brand teamed up late last year to offer gifts to app users.

Additionally, McDonald’s celebrity meals program, which enables customers to request their favorite dishes from musicians and other celebrities they respect, has been a success.

Because they are spending so much more at the store, customers may believe they are getting a better deal at a fast-food restaurant.

According to information made public earlier this month by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, grocery prices increased 12.2 percent in the year ending in June, unadjusted for seasonal variations. Menu prices increased by just 7.7 percent throughout that time.

However, when more individuals begin to believe that the US is experiencing a recession, consumers may eventually start to cut back on their purchasing. In a statement on Tuesday, Chris Kempczinski, the CEO of McDonald’s, bowed to the predicament.

The operating situation is still difficult across the competitive landscape, he declared. “We are preparing for a variety of circumstances.”

Russia to pull out of International Space Station

  • Russia will leave the International Space Station (ISS) after 2024. Yuri Borisov, head of Russia’s space agency, says new station will be built in its place.
  • Russian spacecraft launches from an ESA launch site in French Guiana suspended.

Russia has stated that it will leave the International Space Station (ISS) after 2024 and build its own station in its place.

Yuri Borisov, the new head of Russia’s space agency, stated that Roskosmos would fulfil all of its obligations until then.

Since 1998, the United States and Russia, along with other partners, have successfully collaborated on the International Space Station.

However, relations have deteriorated since Russia invaded Ukraine, and Russia has previously threatened to abandon the project due to Western sanctions.

The International Space Station (ISS), a joint project of five space agencies, has been in orbit around Earth since 1998 and has been used to conduct thousands of scientific experiments.

It has been approved to operate until 2024, but the US wanted to extend it for another six years with the agreement of all partners.

Mr Borisov announced the decision to abandon the project after 2024 during a meeting with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin.

“I think we’ll start putting together a Russian orbital station by this time,” Mr Borisov said, adding that the new station was his agency’s top priority.

“Good,” Mr Putin replied.

It is unclear what this decision means for the future of the International Space Station, with a senior Nasa official telling Reuters that the US agency had not been officially informed of Russia’s plans.

The war in Ukraine appeared to have had little impact on Russia-US ISS cooperation, with the two countries signing an agreement earlier this month to allow Russian cosmonauts to travel to the station on US spacecraft and vice versa.

According to a Roskosmos statement, the agreement will “promote the development of cooperation within the framework of the ISS programme.”

Russians have agreed to return an American astronaut to Earth.
However, the war has harmed other areas of Russian-Western cooperation. The European Space Agency (ESA) has terminated its collaboration with Roskosmos to launch a Mars rover, and Russia has suspended Soyuz spacecraft launches from an ESA launch site in French Guiana.

The Soviet Union and Russia have a long history of space exploration, and achievements such as the first man in space in 1961 are still sources of national pride.

During his meeting with Mr. Putin, Roskosmos chief Mr. Borisov stated that the new Russian space station would provide Russia with space-based services such as navigation and data transmission.
