In some traditional Italian weddings ceremonies, the bride and the groom break a vase or a glass, and the number of the shattered pieces predicted is the number of years of married bliss.

Italians love their traditions and a wedding is one event in which Italian customs are still very much alive. Although these traditions differ from one region to another, many couples follow these today, both in Italy and in the US.

Some of the oldest traditions dating back to the 19th century are no longer followed today, yet are very interesting, particularly in how they differ from region to region. For instance, years ago, in Tuscany, the bride wore a black wedding dress and a white hat, and carried a fan, even in the winter months. Since no unmarried girl was allowed to witness a wedding ceremony, the bride’s “bridesmaids” consisted of married women, who accompanied her to the church.

In Sicily, there were two ceremonies, a civil followed by a religious, and the religion was considered to be more significant. The groom would not consider himself to be married until after the religious ceremony and the date of that ceremony was considered to be the wedding date. Many times the bride would arrive at the church on horseback, with the ceremony frequently occurring at night, and the way is lit with torches.

Ice cream man whose taste buds are insured for $1m

John Harrison is an American ice cream taster, who worked for ice cream company Dreyer’s as its “Official Taste Tester”.

Harrison joined Dreyer’s in 1957, serving until his retirement in 2010. He tasted an average of sixty ice cream flavours daily. Harrison does not consume the ice cream and instead spits it out.

Based on his estimates, he has tasted a few hundred million gallons of ice cream at Dreyer’s. He has aided in the creation of more than one hundred unique ice cream flavours; one source reports that he invented the flavour Cookies n’ Cream. According to a World report on Harrison, “his taste buds are so fine-tuned he can immediately taste the difference between 12-per cent and 11.5-per cent butterfat in a product.” The report also described him as the “most popular ice cream man in America”.

Harrison believes himself to be “the first national spokesman on ice cream”. He has appeared on many television programs, as well as on other media. In 1997, Harrison was awarded the American Tasting Institute’s Master Taster of the Year title.

Born in 1942, all of Harrison’s paternal family, up to his great grandfather, were involved in the ice cream industry in one way or another. In his younger days, he would help out at the ice cream factory his uncle owned. Harrison is married and resides in Palm Desert, California. Harrison’s taste buds are insured for a million dollars. He adheres to a very strict diet, so as not to affect his tasting skills.

Kent Police will hand the ‘Trauma Teddies’, which will be carried in all police vehicles, to children aged under six to help them deal with the shock of a car crash.

PC Darren Chapman, who got a local manufacturer to donate the soft toys, said: “It’s more difficult when young children are involved in a collision because you can’t always explain what is happening to them.

“Fear and confusion can overwhelm them and sometimes all they need is comfort and reassurance rather than the type of explanation you would give an adult.”
