Rising Heat and Poor Air Quality Prompt Monsoon Alert in Karachi

Citizens demand that encroachments be removed and nullahs be cleared before monsoon rains to avoid the same fate as last year.

Last year’s monsoon rain wreaked havoc in Pakistan taking at least 100 lives and affecting millions others across the country. But the country’s financial capital suffered the worst of all forcing Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan and the Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Bajwa to rush to Karachi and take a slew of emergency measures.

The heavy downpour in Karachi brought life to a standstill with streets and homes flooded with rain and sewage water.

Hundreds were left stranded in the city after streets turned into rivers owing to the dilapidated and ill-maintained drainage systems.

Prime Minister announced Rs1.1 trillion emergency package to improve city’s fragile sewage and drainage system as well as widening the heavily encroached nullas.

While thousands suffer from the Supreme Court’s recent orders to remove encroachment along the Orangi and Gujjar nullahs, the directive to widen the two major nullahs of the city will help lessen the impact of urban flooding—saving both lives and infrastructure of the megacity.

“Last years’ experience was a nightmare, I could not get home because of the flooded streets after they were inundated with sewage water owing to the choked nullahs,” remembers Faisal Memon.

He recalls that the main road near Gujjar Nullah in Nazimabad was completely submerged where he and many other motorcyclists like him spent the night stranded.

Memon demanded that the government speed up its cleanliness drive of the city’s nullahs before the onset of the monsoon season so that people don’t have to go through the same fate as last year.

The city’s major natural drains, including the Gujjar, Orangi, Sukhan and Thaddo nullahs, carry sewage to the sea every day. The sewage arrives into these nullahs from 18 smaller drains that span across the city. There are 11 underpasses and 106 roads that are considered most vulnerable during monsoon season.

Last year, the government allocated Rs22 million to remove the sludge from nullahs, however, a year on nothing much has been done to that effect.

An anti-encroachment drive on the directives of the Supreme Court is under way to widen the Orangi and Gujjar nullahs by 30 feet.

According to the survey conducted by NED University, Gujjar Nullah needs to be brought back to its original shape on an urgent basis to the right-of-way (ROW) for passage of water before the rain.

In 2020 the local government department along with Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB), KMC, six district municipal corporations and National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) under a $100 million World Bank programme had cleared three major nullahs in the city — Gujjar, Korangi and Mowach Goth nullah — and removed 4.3 million cubic feet sludge from these drains.

These nullahs, however, are clogged again due to failure of city’s civic bodies or Sindh government’s lenient attitude.
As a routine practice, the city administration has issued press statements claiming that an emergency plan has already been materialised.

The Karachi administrator has directed his subordinates to make all necessary arrangements for monsoon rains before the start of the rainy season, so that any emergency situation could be dealt with in a timely and efficient manner.

FPCCI slams withdrawal of tax exemption to IT industry

6th of September

KARACHI: The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) has expressed concern over the withdrawal of tax exemption to the information technology (IT) sector, a statement said on Friday.

FPCCI President Mian Nasser Hyatt Maggo criticised the inclusion of the IT sector in the tax regime in the Federal Budget 2021/22, whereas it was exempted till 2025. This is the only industry in Pakistan that has posted over 70 per cent growth in exports during the last two years, and if the current pace of growth continues, it has the potential to earn up to $10 billion/annum in next three to four years, he said, adding that the government should keep it tax-free till 2025, as promulgated earlier.

[amazonad category=”Auto”]

Maggo lauded Federal Minister for IT and Telecom Syed Amin Ul Haque, who visited the FPCCI, for increasing the IT exports and fast spreading 4G connectivity in the country. He said the government issues bonds in the international markets to meet its budgetary requirements at more than 7 per cent and ignores its foreign exchange earning entrepreneurs.

If the government announces a mere 5 per cent rebate to IT exporters, they can easily bring $10 billion/annum in the country, he said, adding that Bangladesh provides a 10 per cent rebate in this regard.

The IT minister said all major development projects under the IT and Telecom Ministry are being carried out across Pakistan without any bias and in a time-bound fashion. Four weeks ago, a cabinet meeting was held in a paperless environment.

Now, the ministry is aiming at conducting parliamentary sessions in a paperless environment.

Syed Junaid Imam, Member IT, said that the IT industry has the potential of exponential growth if equity capital can be made available through venture capitalists. He requested the FPCCI members to invest in IT-related startups.

Muhammad Sohail Rajput, federal secretary for IT and Telecom Ministry, said that the ministry is opening IT parks and special zones to set up IT businesses and that will not be confined to large cities; but smaller cities will also be incorporated.

Osman Nasir, managing director of the Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB), said that the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and the IT industry are not on the same page and there may be issues and bottlenecks if the FBR does not accommodate peculiar needs of the country.

Zohaib Khan, convener of the FPCCI’s Standing Committee on IT, expressed hopes with the inclusion of Pakistan into the Amazon’s seller list but warned that the SMEs need to be given adequate training on their systems and quality standards to make full and sustainable use of the opportunity.

Muhammad Azam Mughal, convener of the FPCCI’s Standing Committee on Cyber Crimes, highlighted the ever-increasing phenomenon of online harassment of women. The FIA must enhance its capacity to counter the menace, he added.

Maggo also stressed the need to set up a cyber-security wing to create awareness and help the business community remain secure in an online environment.

He expressed shock over taxes and duties on spare parts of laptops being made in Pakistan, whereas fully-assembled laptops are duty-free in Pakistan. This is a huge disparity and this will continue to keep Pakistan reliant on imported laptops forever.

He demanded that the IT-related hardware such as laptops, smartphones, biometric machines, ATM machines, POS machines, etc, should be made in Pakistan and their parts must be free from all taxes and duties.

Later, the FPCCI officials thanked the federal IT minister for his visit and briefing on various ongoing large-scale developmental projects in IT and Telecom industries. The FPCCI also appreciates the decision to declare telecom as an industry in the federal budget.

PSL 2021: Noor Ahmad Helps Karachi Kings To Keep Their Playoff Hopes Alive

PSL 2021: Noor Ahmad Helps Karachi Kings To Keep Their Playoff Hopes Alive

Noor Ahmad Afghanistan’s left-arm spinner keeps Karachi Kings playoff hopes alive as they crushed Lahore Qalandars by seven runs and bag their fourth win of Pakistan Super League (PSL) sixth edition.

Karachi opts to bat, Babar Azam (54) and Martin Guptill (43) laid the platform for Karachi 176/5 with their 88-run stand. Noor then had figures of 4-0-19-2 to keep Lahore at bay.

Karachi lost Sharjeel early but recovered well with the second-wicket Babar-Guptill stand. There was a tremble as they went from 109 runs for 1 wicket to 132 runs for 5 wickets by the end of the 16th over.

[amazonad category=”Electronics”]

Imad Wasim’s 30 runs off 19 balls and Danish Aziz’s 16 runs off 10 balls produced the much-needed late fireworks to push the score past 170 runs. Lahore was left regretting being poor on the field as they dropped Babar’s catch three times during his half-century.

Fakhar Zaman smashes two sixes in the first over but soon found it tough to get going. He sooner fell for 19 runs off 26 balls as the batsmen continued to struggle for pace. Mohammad Hafeez made 36 runs off 36 balls but Noor’s twin strikes and the run-out of Agha Salman meant the side slipped to 92 runs for 5 wickets in 14 overs.

Tim David was in an unforgiving mood and swung his side’s fortune with his 34 runs off 14 balls as James Faulkner’s 33 runs off 18 balls too had his share of fun. Their 58-runs stand left Karachi feeling nervous.

However, Abbas Afridi provided the crucial breakthrough on the last ball of the 18th over as he dismissed David with Lahore 27 runs away. Faulkner fell in the final over as Rashid Khan and Shaheen Afridi failed to close the chase.
