Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey donates $15m for basic-income support

Jack Dorsey

CEO of Twitter, Jack Dorsey has donated $15 million to fund universal basic income programmes in the United States (US).

The donation by Jack Dorsey will help cities send cheques to more than 1,500 families. It comes as poverty rates in the US rise amidst economic downfall due to Coronavirus pandemic.

More than 12 million Americans are at risk of losing access to unemployment benefits at the end of the month, as the government’s virus aid expires.

“Philanthropy and charity is not justice but in the absence of leadership and action… our constituents need cash relief,” said Michael Tubbs, the outgoing mayor of Stockton, who founded the Mayors for a Guaranteed Income Network in June.

The donation will provide the 30 cities in the network up to $500,000 each for their universal basic income programmes, many of which have been announced in recent months as the crisis has unfolded.

They also offer variety of degrees of support. For example, Pittsburgh, in Pennsylvania said it plans to give 200 residents $500 a month for two years, while in Compton, in California, help will go to 800 families, with support varying depending on factors like number of children.

On Twitter, Mr Dorsey thanked the mayors for their efforts and wrote that he hoped the experiments would “inform federal policy in the future”.

Earlier in a day, Pakistan Navy celebrated the 49th Hangor Day with national zeal and enthusiasm to pay homage to the veteran warriors who outflanked Indian ships in 1971.

Hangor, under the command of Commander Ahmed Tasnim, sank the Indian Navy’s INS Khukri, an anti-submarine frigate, with one homing torpedo on 9 December 1971 during the western front of the third war with India in 1971.

This was the only recorded submarine kill after World War II until the Falklands War, when the Royal Navy’s nuclear submarine, HMS Conqueror, sank the Argentine Navy cruiser, General Belgrano.

Pfizer-BioNTech: UK issues allergy warning over new COVID-19 vaccine

Pfizer says to sell 10 mn Covid-19 treatments to US for $5.3 bn

After the arrival of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine in the United Kingdom (UK), the medicine regulator has advised people with a history of significant allergic reactions to not get the vaccine.

According to the details, two people had major adverse effects on the first day of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine arrival.

National Health Service medical director Stephen Powis said the advice had been changed after two NHS workers reported anaphylactoid reactions associated with getting the shot.

“As is common with new vaccines the MHRA (regulator) have advised on a precautionary basis that people with a significant history of allergic reactions do not receive this vaccination, after two people with a history of significant allergic reactions responded adversely yesterday,” Powis said. “Both are recovering well,” he added.

Several thousand people were vaccinated on Tuesday in hospital clinics on the first day of the UK rollout of the new Covid jab.

An expert in immunology at Imperial College London, said: “The fact that we know so soon about these two allergic reactions and that the regulator has acted on this to issue precautionary advice shows that this monitoring system is working well.”

However, two people, out of thousands immunized, had an allergic reaction which they recovered from.

Such reactions can happen with any vaccine and are treated with drugs such as steroids or adrenaline.
