Gluttonous Cosmic ‘black widow’: Heaviest-known neuron star

Gluttonous Cosmic ‘black widow’
  • The largest known neutron star, often known as a “black widow,” has been spotted by astronomers.
  • The neutron star is spinning at 707 times per second and has a mass that is around 2.35 times that of our sun.
  • The neutron star is 1.4 times the mass of our sun and shares an orbit with another star.

The largest known neutron star, often known as a “black widow,” has been spotted by astronomers. It gained its size by consuming the majority of the mass of a stellar companion that was caught up in an unhappy cosmic union.

According to the researchers, the neutron star is frantically spinning at 707 times per second and has a mass that is around 2.35 times higher than our sun, which may be the greatest mass that such things may have before collapsing into a black hole.

A large star’s compact compacted core, which resulted from a supernova explosion at the conclusion of its life cycle, is what makes up a neutron star. The neutron star that the researchers describe is a pulsar, a sort of highly magnetized neutron star that emits electromagnetic radiation beams from its poles.

From the viewpoint of an observer on Earth, these beams appear to pulse as it spins, similar to the spinning light of a lighthouse.

It is known that just one other neutron star spins more swiftly than this one.

According to Roger Romani, director of Stanford University’s Center for Space Science and Astrophysics and a co-author of the study that was published this week in the Astrophysical Journal Letters, “the heavier the neutron star, the denser the material in its core.”

“Because it is the heaviest neutron star known, it contains the universe’s densest stuff. If it were any heavier, it would fall to a black hole and the contents would be hidden behind the event horizon, eternally hidden from view “Romani tacked on

The event horizon of a black hole is the boundary beyond which all matter, including light, is irretrievably dragged in.

The existence of this neutron star, according to Romani, “is an essential probe of these physical extremes as we do not yet know how matter works at these densities.”

According to Romani, the neutron star, officially known as PSR J0952-0607, is situated in our Milky Way galaxy in the direction of the constellation Sextans and is around 20,000 light years away from Earth. 5.9 trillion miles is the distance that light travels in a year, or a light year (9.5 trillion km). The Keck I telescope in Hawaii was used by the researchers to study it.

Thermonuclear fusion occurs in the cores of stars with masses of around eight or more times that of the sun, converting hydrogen into heavier elements.

The iron core collapses into a neutron star with a diameter of only about a city when it builds up to roughly 1.4 times the mass of our sun, with the remaining material being swept away in the supernova explosion.

This neutron star shares an orbit with another star in a configuration known as a binary system. The term “black widow” was given to the type of neutron star in honour of female black widow spiders that consume their male mates after mating.

It appears to have been born with a neutron star’s typical mass, which is about 1.4 times the mass of the sun.

However, due to its gravitational pull, which stole material from its companion star, it was able to grow to an apparent maximum mass before collapsing into a black hole, the densest known object.

Its companion star has been nearly stripped bare by the black widow, losing maybe 98 percent of its mass, leaving it at 20 times the mass of Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, a long cry from its previous enormity.

According to study co-author and University of California, Berkeley astronomy professor Alex Filippenko, “in a case of cosmic ingratitude, the black widow pulsar, which has devoured a large portion of its mate, now heats and evaporates the companion down to planetary masses and possibly complete annihilation.”

Malawi claims $300 bn in mining taxes from US Company

Malawi
  • Malawi is claiming over $300 billion from the United States company Columbia Gem House.
  • Attorney general accuses the firm of evading duty on sales of rubies and sapphires mined in Malawi.
  • Malawi’s attorney general Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda confirms he authored the claim letter.

Malawi is claiming over $300 billion from United States company Columbia Gem House for unpaid taxes on minerals extracted from the country and exported to the United States, the attorney general told AFP Friday.

A July 26 letter from Malawi’s attorney general Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda to Columbia Gem House accused the firm of evading duty on sales of rubies and sapphires mined at its Chimwadzulo Mine in Ntcheu, Malawi from 2008.

In an interview with AFP on Friday, Nyirenda confirmed he authored the claim letter.

“I confirm, it’s from me,” he said.

In the letter, Nyirenda alleges Nyala Mines Limited, a Columbia Gem House subsidiary, paid taxes of just $600 against projected $24 billion revenues from their Malawian operation.

He demanded the company pay Malawi’s government $309,600,000,000 in taxes.

“Nyala Mines Limited and Columbia Gem House breached (the law) when they failed to disclose all income realised from the investment and when they engaged in trade mispricing and improper transfer pricing techniques,” the letter reads.

Nyirenda said Malawi could seek to prosecute Nyala Mines Limited and Columbia Gem House and their officers, along with anyone implicated in tax evasion or export fraud schemes.

“It is Malawi’s position that you dishonestly changed the name of the mining company to Nyala Mines Limited to disguise the origin of the company, that is, so that the new name of the company sounded local to avoid suspicion and detection,” Nyirenda wrote.

He accused both Nyala Mines and Columbia Gem House of dishonestly exporting ruby and sapphire from Malawi, and profiting by not paying taxes and royalties due.

“I, therefore, demand from you the payment of the said sum of US$309,600,000,000 plus interest at the commercial lending rate from the date the said taxes and royalties fell due to the date of payment within 30 days,” the letter says.

There was no immediate comment from either Nyala Mines Limited or Columbia Gem House.

With new ‘super minister,’ Argentina seeks political fix to economic woes

Argentina economic woes
  • Argentina has suffered years of economic crisis, with 37 percent of its population now living in poverty.
  • Sergio Massa is a lawyer by trade who has spent years in politics.
  • Analysts see Massa as a pragmatic figure who has good relations with business leaders and the markets.

Argentine President Alberto Fernandez is looking for a political solution to the country’s economic crisis with his appointment of a long-term politician as a new “super minister,” analysts say.

The South American country has suffered years of economic crisis, with some 37 percent of its population now living in poverty.

Inflation for the first half of this year alone topped 36 percent, and is predicted to reach 80 percent by the year’s end.

With that crisis-backdrop, Fernandez on Thursday named Sergio Massa, the current head of Congress’ lower house, as a new super minister to oversee the economy, development and agriculture ministries as well as relations with international organizations.

Massa, a lawyer by trade who has spent years in politics, replaces economist Silvina Batakis, who had been on the job less than a month.

“Massa is not an economist but a politician. But the point is that Argentina’s crisis is political, it needs a person with broad shoulders and political skill,” analyst Carlos Fara told AFP.

One of Argentina’s major problems is the ongoing power struggle inside the ruling Frente de Todos political coalition between Fernandez and Vice President Cristina Kirchner, herself a former president.

In early July, Batakis’s predecessor Martin Guzman resigned suddenly amid the political turmoil.

Guzman, who was in charge of renegotiating Argentina’s $44 billion debt to the International Monetary Fund, was a close ally of Fernandez.

However, “Massa brings sufficient consensus in the leadership of the ruling Frente de Todos coalition and may be able to make decisions that are not popular,” said Fara.

‘Pragmatic’ appointment

The markets did not falter on Friday, one day after the appointment.

“The markets’ reaction was positive because they see in Massa a pragmatic figure who has good relations with business leaders and the markets,” economist Nery Persichini from the GMA Capital consultancy told AFP.

Massa will assume his new position on Tuesday after the Chamber of Deputies has appointed his successor. He will then announce his first measures the following day.

“It is very important that a politician is in charge of the economy. Putting technical people in charge did not work. This will generate peace in the markets, it’s a pragmatic move,” Pablo Tigani, director of the Hacer economic consultancy, told AFP.

Fernandez said the new super minister appointment is aimed at creating “better coordination” on economic policy.

As part of Argentina’s negotiations with the IMF, it has committed to reducing its public deficit from three percent in 2021 to 0.9 percent by 2024.

One of Massa’s toughest challenges will be to increase Argentina’s available international reserves, which analysts say are at critical levels, as well as reducing the fiscal deficit.

“I’m not a savior. Politics doesn’t need saviors, it needs servants,” said Massa on Twitter.

“Argentina’s problems cannot be solved by one person, they will be resolved by teamwork.”

Government has ‘no direction’

Persichini says “doubts surround Massa’s true ability to reduce public spending and to temper the fiscal deficit.

“The markets are asking themselves whether the new super minister has the backing of Vice President Cristina Kirchner to implement an adjustment and correct relative price imbalances.”

Fiscal discipline has so far not protected the poorest Argentines from the ravages of galloping inflation that is chipping away at their meager earnings.

On Thursday, thousands of people demonstrated in Buenos Aires demanding a “universal salary.”

Protesters want a minimum living wage worth 67,000 pesos (around $490 at the official exchange rate), which amounts to the cost of two basic food baskets, for the country’s lowest earners.

“It is as if the government has no direction, that it’s drowning. I’m very worried about the lack of work, about the incredible inflation,” Nestor, an unemployed 54-year-old, told AFP.

OnePlus 10T’s battery size verified; fast charging than 10 Pro

OnePlus 10T
  • The 10T will have a 4,800 mAh battery, 200 mAh less than the battery in the 10 Pro.
  • It will enable 150W charging, which can charge the battery from 0 to 100% in 19 minutes.
  • The phone will also preserve 80% of its initial capacity after 1,600 charge cycles.

The OnePlus 10T will be on sale next week, and the company has already shared details about its design and important specifications, including the SoC, cameras, RAM, storage, and screen refresh rate.

Now, only a few days before the announcement, OnePlus has provided battery information for the 10T.

According to OnePlus, the 10T will have a 4,800 mAh battery, which is 200 mAh less than the battery in the 10 Pro but offers quicker charging.

The OnePlus 10T will enable 150W charging, which, according to OnePlus, can charge the 4,800 mAh battery from 0 to 100% in just 19 minutes. The OnePlus 10 Pro supports 65W charging in North America and up to 80W in other territories.

Although OnePlus just released the OnePlus Ace and OnePlus 10R with those charging rates, the 10T is not the first OnePlus smartphone to handle 150W charging. Both have 4,500 mAh batteries inside, while the 10R 80W has a battery with a capacity of 5,000 mAh.

Nevertheless, the 10T will not charge at the fastest supported speeds in all areas, just like the 10 Pro. It will be 125W in North America, but it won’t make much of a difference because the 10T will only take a minute longer to charge from 0% to 100%, according to OnePlus.

The 150W SUPERVOOC Endurance Edition technology only supports charging outlets rated at 220V or above, and in North America, the majority of outlets are only rated at 110V or 120V.

This results in a slower charging speed in North America. In areas where the charging outlets are rated at 220V or more, the OnePlus 10T you buy in North America will still be capable of up to 150W of power.

OnePlus claims that regardless of where you live—in North America, India, or Europe—you will only be able to charge your 10T at 125W or 150W if you use the included SUPERVOOC cable and 160W power adapter.

This is because the phone uses a 128-bit encryption algorithm that only detects genuine SUPERVOOC cables and adapters to ensure secure charging. However, it won’t come as a surprise if the OnePlus 10T can be charged at 150W speeds using the 160W converter that is included with the Realme GT Neo 3 150W.

Speaking of adapters, the OnePlus 10T will come with a 160W charger that supports the PD charging protocol so you can swiftly charge your tablets, laptops, and mobile gaming consoles.

In its blog post, OnePlus also discussed the 10T’s Smart Battery Health Algorithm and Battery Healing Technology, which together can preserve 80% of the battery’s initial capacity after 1,600 charge cycles.

To find out more about the charging technology used by the OnePlus 10T, click the source link at the end of this article.

On August 3, the OnePlus 10T will make its formal debut. It is confirmed to have a 120Hz screen, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC, and three rear cameras (a 50MP primary camera, an 8MP ultrawide camera, and a 2MP macro camera).

The smartphone will ship with 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage, and it will run OxygenOS 13 out of the box. There will probably be other RAM possibilities, though this is not yet verified.

Additionally, it is unknown whether OnePlus will release a 10T with a larger battery and a slower charging rate than the 10R, or if there will only be one model.

The OnePlus Ace Pro, which is anticipated to be the OnePlus 10T for the Chinese market and run ColorOS rather than OxygenOS, will also be unveiled by OnePlus in China on the same day.

Rupee: Worst month since 1972

UNISAME calls for steps to curb further rupee depreciation
  • The largest monthly decrease in history was in July, when the local currency fell by about Rs34.5, or more than 14 percent.
  • State Bank of Pakistan’s foreign exchange holdings have decreased by $7.811 billion, reaching $8.575 billion in July.
  • Heavy imports and rising commodity costs are to blame for the current account gap’s recent increase.

The Pakistani rupee experienced its worst month since 1972 amid a shortage of dollars and worries over a delay in an International Monetary Fund (IMF) rescue program, according to The News on Saturday.

The largest monthly decrease in history was in July, when the local currency fell by about Rs34.5, or more than 14 percent, versus the US dollar due to fears of a potential default and record-low foreign exchange reserves.

It should be mentioned that it is the second-worst global loss of the month after the value of the currency of Ukraine.

The nation is attempting to allay concerns that it could follow Sri Lanka into default this year as fresh political uncertainty following the Punjab by-elections cast doubt on its ability to secure its IMF loan tranche.

Ankur Shukla, a Mumbai-based analyst for Bloomberg Economics, asked: “What’s causing the recent plunge? Politics, according to the finance minister, are to blame. The governor of the central bank points to the rising dollar.

The underlying motivation is simpler: concern that the nation might not get IMF assistance swiftly enough to avoid following Sri Lanka into default.

The sharpest loss in the rupee demonstrates the mounting worries about the nation’s poor foreign liquidity position. Since February, the State Bank of Pakistan’s (SBP) foreign exchange holdings have decreased by $7.811 billion, reaching $8.575 billion in July, or almost six weeks’ worth of imports.

The current account deficit, meanwhile, increased from $2.8 billion to $17.4 billion in July-June (the fiscal year 2021-22) from the previous year. Heavy imports and rising commodity costs, particularly for oil, are to blame for the current account gap’s recent increase.

In response to market unease over political unpredictability postponing the IMF rescue for the country, the rupee, and the nation’s dollar-denominated bonds have fallen.

By getting billions of dollars from the Washington-based lender and countries like China and Saudi Arabia, Pakistan is aiming to ease worries that it may follow Sri Lanka into default this year.

In a research report, Arif Habib Limited claimed that the political risks and shifting paradigms had a negative impact on foreign investors’ and creditors’ trust, which had a significant negative impact on the currency.

“Although we think the rupee still has a long-term tendency to depreciate, in the near future, we anticipate some stability to be restored. We credit SBP efforts to reduce market speculation as well as inflows from bilateral and multilateral creditors, IMF inflows, and strengthening of some macroeconomic factors for this short-term stability.

Investors’ nerves are calmed by news that Pakistan’s army leader has asked the US to help expedite $1.2 billion in additional funding for Pakistan and by anticipation of early elections.

The rupee was able to recoup some of its losses and ended Friday at 239.37 to the dollar. On Thursday, it reached a low of 239,94. The rupee increased 0.24 percent from one day to the next.

The local currency recovered after experiencing a 13.31 percent decline in the previous ten trading sessions. The rupee, meanwhile, continued to experience intense pressure on the street market. To settle at 244 versus the dollar, it lost 4 rupees.

Mostly good earnings lift US stocks to 3rd straight gain

US stocks
  • The S&P 500 finished at 4,130.29, up 1.4 percent for the day.
  • The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 1.0 percent to 32,845.13.
  • The tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index jumped 1.9 percent.

Wall Street stocks finished a strong week on a positive note Friday, extending its rally to three days behind strong gains from Amazon, ExxonMobil and other giants following earnings results.

Investors shrugged off the latest indicator of persistent inflation, as Commerce Department data showed the personal consumption expenditures price index jumped 1.0 percent in June compared to May, outpacing personal income gains, which rose just 0.6 percent.

But stocks continued to push higher, rising again after the Federal Reserve’s second straight 75 basis point increase and negative GDP data suggesting a heightened risk of a US recession.

“The Fed has a clear path to continue with aggressive hikes, but many are still thinking they’ll be inclined to go at only a half point in September,” said Oanda’s Edward Moya.

The broad-based S&P 500 finished at 4,130.29, up 1.4 percent for the day and 4.3 percent for the week.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 1.0 percent to 32,845.13, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index jumped 1.9 percent to 12,390.69.

Among individual companies, Amazon surged 10.4 percent after impressing analysts with strong online sales and a good performance in its web services business.

Apple also climbed, winning 3.3 percent after reporting better-than-expected results on continued strength of iPhones.

ExxonMobil jumped 4.7 percent and Chevron soared 8.7 percent after both companies reported quarterly earnings records on the rise in energy prices following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

But Procter & Gamble dropped 6.1 percent on disappointment over its outlook, while fellow Dow member Intel sank 8.6 percent after reporting a quarterly loss and cutting it sales outlook.

Intel blamed “the sudden and rapid decline in economic activity” as well as “our own execution issues.”

Uber courts drivers by letting them pick rides

Uber
  • Uber will let drivers see trip details before deciding whether to accept them.
  • The new feature, called Upfront Fares, was tested in several cities and was a success with drivers.
  • Uber is engaged in a long-term effort to prove its business model is socially and economically viable.

Uber on Friday said it will let drivers in the United States see trip details before deciding whether to accept them — a new feature long sought by drivers.

A common lament by drivers at the app-summoned ride platform has been that they have to accept a request before learning where trips will take them, or how profitable they will be.

“Our new trip request screen makes it easier for drivers to decide if a trip is worth their time and effort by providing all the details — including exactly how much they’ll earn and where they’re going — upfront,” chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi said in a blog post.

Revealing details only once a driver had accepted a trip was seen as a way to ensure riders would get picked up promptly, and not be snubbed because they were headed to locations deemed undesirable by drivers.

But Khosrowshahi said drivers have made it clear that they want more flexibility and choice.

Uber said the new feature, called Upfront Fares, was tested in several cities and was a success with drivers while resulting in shorter wait times for passengers.

The ride-sharing firm will also shift from sending drivers a single ride request at a time, to letting them pick from a list of detailed passenger requests in an area.

Uber is engaged in a long-term effort to prove that its business model is socially and economy viable.

The “gig economy” — which uses temporary independent contractors for short-term tasks — has grown rapidly since Uber’s launch in 2009 and is promoted as a flexible way for people to earn money without the constraints of a full-time job.

But there has been growing backlash in countries around the world about the conditions and dangers gig workers face.

Uber driver ranks — which shrank during the Covid-19 pandemic — have not rebounded as quickly as demand for rides, and soaring fuel costs have made the gigs less attractive.

The firm in March announced a surcharge on both rides and Uber Eats meal deliveries that would go directly to drivers to help offset high fuel prices.

Twitter experiments including several multimedia in single tweet

Twitter
  • Twitter is testing a new feature that allows multiple media files to be attached to a single tweet.
  • People are utilizing photos, GIFS, and videos to enhance their Twitter interactions.
  • The feature will only be available to select accounts for a limited time at the moment.

A new feature that will allow users to attach material in several formats to a single tweet is being tested by Twitter. An image, video, or GIF could all be added to a single tweet using this functionality.

Anyone who has used Twitter for any length of time is aware that the company currently only supports the attachment of one specific form of material.

Four photographs can be attached, but there was no method to combine videos, GIFs, or more than one to do so.

With this upgrade, the four-form-of-media restriction still applies, but you can now fill all four spaces with any combination of pictures, videos, and GIFs.

In an interview with Techcrunch, Twitter stated, “We’re testing a new feature that will let people blend up to four media files into a single tweet, regardless of format, with select accounts for a limited time.

People are utilizing photos, GIFS, and videos to enhance their Twitter interactions, which are becoming more and more visual. With this experiment, we want to find out how users can combine these various media types to tweet in ways that go beyond 280 characters.

The feature will only be accessible to selected accounts in specified regions, as is customary for Twitter experiments. When, if ever, the feature will be made available to all users is yet unknown.
