  • Aakash Chopra criticized team groupings in T20 World Cup 2024.
  • He highlighted the potential for upsets in Group D.
  • He attributed this to "pure economics".
Esteemed cricket commentator Aakash Chopra has turned heads with his critique of the team distributions in the current 2024 T20 World Cup, hosted by the USA and West Indies. Chopra pointed out perceived disparities, hinting that financial motives might have played a role in the team groupings. In his latest video analysis, the prominent analyst examined the group structures, observing that cricket giants such as India, Pakistan, England, and Australia appear to be placed in comparatively advantageous groups. Group A features India and Pakistan, joined by Ireland, Canada, and the USA, while Group B comprises England and Australia, along with Scotland, Namibia, and Oman. In his commentary, Chopra suggested that there seems to be a deliberate arrangement of teams to favor the advancement of the sport’s most popular nations. “Logically, Scotland shouldn’t trouble England that much but Scotland and Ireland are teams whose players are seen playing a lot in county cricket, and that’s why it’s a team that can trouble slightly. It’s a slight potential banana skin. This group has Australia and England, and Scotland are the third biggest team. So the understanding has been kept that qualification becomes certain,” Chopra remarked. “You might be wondering why India are in such a group whereas Group D has South Africa, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh and the Netherlands. There are chances of so many upsets. England and Australia are in a group from which qualification will be easy. India and Pakistan are also in such a group. This is pure economics. You want your main teams to progress,” he continued. [embedpost slug = "/t20-world-cup-2024-what-shahid-afridi-predicted-for-pakistan-know-here/"]
