ISLAMABAD: Minister for Energy Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari has said that Pakistan has set clear targets to move towards clean energy.

During a meeting, he shared that independent boards are being formed in power distribution companies to improve governance, bring in professional expertise, and ensure accountability.

Leghari said the government has managed to cut losses in the power distribution sector by almost one-third in just one year. He added that plans are also in place to privatize some distribution companies to boost their performance.

In a recent discussion with a delegation of the Asian Development Bank, the minister stressed that clean energy is a top priority for the government. He said a new tariff for electric vehicles has already been introduced, while Pakistan is also seeking international cooperation to upgrade its grid and metering systems.

Highlighting the country’s commitment to environmental responsibility, Leghari noted that Pakistan has already shut down about 2,800 megawatts of fossil fuel power plants ahead of schedule. He said the government is now working to gain access to green financing and carbon credits to support its clean energy goals.
