KARACHI: A mild quake jolted parts of Karachi on Friday evening, briefly alarming residents across the city.

The 2.9-magnitude event was recorded at 6:01pm, with its epicentre located within Karachi at a depth of 10 kilometres. No casualties or property damage were reported following the incident.

The low-intensity activity was felt in several parts of the port city but did not cause any major impact.

Pakistan remains vulnerable to seismic activity due to its location along the boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.

The northward movement of the Indian plate against the Eurasian plate makes large parts of South Asia, including Pakistan, prone to such events.

The country has witnessed several major disasters in recent decades. In February this year, a 5.8-magnitude quake affected Islamabad, Swat, and Hunza.

One of the deadliest incidents occurred in Azad Kashmir in 2005, claiming more than 73,000 lives and leaving millions displaced.

Balochistan also faced severe consequences in 2021 when a quake in Harnai killed at least 20 people, while landslides further complicated rescue efforts.

Experts have stressed the importance of preparedness in vulnerable regions, noting that difficult terrain and limited access can create challenges during emergency response operations.

Authorities continue to emphasise public awareness, safety measures, and effective planning to minimise risks during future seismic events.
