You are not a Disney princess: Witty warning about a cougar encounter sparks laughter. Hiking on a forest route is a delightful sport that many people like. However, there are some things to keep in mind when doing so, particularly when encountering wildlife. And authorities all over the world frequently issue cautions on social media to raise public awareness. The Washington State Department of Natural Resources, a government department, recently posted one such post. They took to Instagram to share how to react if they come across a cougar.
“You are not a Disney princess. Do not approach. Do not offer belly rubs. Do not offer a cardboard box,” they said in a lighthearted tone, referring to how frequently protagonists in animated films are seen befriending wild creatures. “While cougars usually want nothing to do with humans (so leave the catnip at home), it’s important to be prepared when you’re out exploring,” they added. The department also provided specific instructions on what to do and what to avoid. They also posted an image and a video that they said were taken by photographer Ben Babussis. They repeated their first statement at the end of the post and added, “You’ll be fine? You’ll be fine. Just stay alert and remember: You aren’t a Disney princess.”
