Celebrities and influential people in the fashion industry are remembering Dame Vivienne Westwood, an English designer, and activist who died on Thursday. She was 81.
The label said in an Instagram post that Westwood died peacefully in South London’s Clapham, surrounded by friends and family. The cause of death was not made public right away.
“Vivienne continued to do the things she loved, up until the last moment, designing, working on her art, writing her book, and changing the world for the better. She led an amazing life. Her innovation and impact over the last 60 years has been immense and will continue into the future,” the label wrote in the announcement.
“The world needs people like Vivienne to make things better,” said the label’s last line.
Westwood is known for changing fashion, especially in London in the mid-1970s. His influence has been felt by many stars, designers, stylists, and models, who then took to social media to mourn and honor the fashion icon.

The former Spice Girl and namesake fashion designer paid tribute to her fellow worker in the fashion industry on her Instagram Story by writing, “I’m so sad to learn of the passing of legendary designer and activist Dame Vivienne Westwood. My thoughts are with her family at this incredibly sad time. VB.”
