A woman has explained what it’s actually like to be a witch, from casting spells during full moons to warding off vampires.
Marieke Lexmond, 52, is the author of the fantasy book The Madigan Chronicles, in which she divides her time between New Orleans and the west coast of Ireland.
Oh, and she manufactures jewellery that helps to dispel negative energy.
While the author was born a witch, she did not begin to investigate what that meant until she began reading books and tarot cards.
While some may use cauldrons and wear witch’s caps, this is not the case for every witch you may encounter.
“I believe there are many misconceptions about witches; it’s not as in the movies and not even in my books! I’ve taken things from my practices and spiced them up with a dose of fantasy,” she revealed exclusively to the sources.
“I don’t dress up for a ritual or dance naked under the full moon. That doesn’t mean I don’t like to have fun with it.”
“And, of course, there’s the misconception that witches are evil. That’s absolute nonsense. We are just like everybody else. You probably don’t even recognise a witch if you run into one.”
She said, “It’s about being attuned to your feelings and the living things around you. You are working with the cycles of nature, like the seasons and the moon cycles.”
Although covens can be formed and witchcraft practised together, Marieke preferred to go her own path.
She really enjoys autumn since it is the finest season for connecting with ancestors, simmering on new initiatives, and growing roots.
She noted that a ritual does not have to be complicated. Walking in the woods while conversing with the trees, for example, is a ritual, as is standing barefoot in the ocean and communicating with it.
If the author wants to set a specific aim, she will perform a full moon ritual – and she will always perform a cleansing spell if she moves to a new residence.
She also enjoys catching a sunrise or sunset, describing the transition between day and night as “a glorious moment to replenish your energy”.
Marieke also uses jewellery to conduct a variety of spells, which she claims helps to fight off negative energy and psychic vampires.
“I make different spells, which are basically an intention and can be used for protection if that is what they are meant to do. Some are for love, encouragement and help make a difficult decision,” she explained.
“Making spells needs a specific mindset, and I do it when I feel in the right head space. Unless someone has a particular request, then I generally make it in the next moon cycle.”
“I constantly gather the things I craft my spells from finding things on the beach, in a forest, in a thrift store or old jewellery from people, whatever I sense a connection with. I have boxes full of little things.”
“Not one of my spells is the same; I love to make them in these lockets or old pocket watches, as that’s easy to wear.”
When Marieke is finished crafting the spell, she will perform a small ritual under the full moon and leave it to charge all night in the moonlight.
“Although certain things are going in a physic vampire spell – the rune for protection, some salt, a rose, I’m a big believer in intuition; you must take what is right at that moment and speaks to you,” she continued.
The 52-year-old wants people to understand that while witches strive to do no harm, no one is perfect.
Marieke makes an effort to listen to the universe’s lessons on a daily basis.
While she does not perform hexes or curses, she does not leave herself vulnerable.
When she enters a larger group, she carefully selects her jewellery. For example, when she is unsure about the energy around her, she prefers to wear amber.
Marieke added, “I will wear my all-seeing eye if I want to be extra on my guard or something reflective if I’m worried that there will be people with less well intentions. It’s easy to pick specific stones to wear for the occasion. Needless to say, I have options.
“But most witches are open-minded, caring, and in tune with nature and its cycles. It’s a mindful way to live, especially in these trying times.”
“Last but not least, it’s Halloween season, the time to take life and yourself a little less seriously and do silly things. Play into these misconceptions and have a bit of fun.”
