Shane Watson retires from cricket

Australian all-rounder Shane Watson has announced to retire from all forms of cricket.

According to the details, Shane Watson had retired from international cricket back in 2016, however, was very active in playing T20 franchise cricket globally.

In a twitter statement he wrote, “This closing chapter is going to be so hard to top, but I am going to try. I truly am forever grateful to have lived this amazing dream. Now onto the next exciting one.”

The right-arm fast bowler on November 3 has confirmed that he was bringing the curtain down on 20 years of professional cricket.

In a YouTube video, he thanked his parents, teammates and coaches for all the unconditional support they gave him during his career.

I feel crazily lucky to have lived out my dream, and then some,” Watson said in a video message posted on his website. “It feels like the right time. Knowing that I’ve played my last game of cricket ever for my beloved CSK … To think that I’m finishing up my playing days as a 39-year-old, after all of my injury setbacks that I had along the way, I feel so ridiculously fortunate.”

He had played 343 T20 matches scoring 8821 runs and taking 216 wickets in his 16-year-career. He represented Australia in 59 Tests, 190 ODIs and 58 T20Is from 2005-2016.

Watson remained an integral part of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), representing Islamabad United in 2016 and 2017. He played for Quetta Gladiators in the past two seasons.

Moreover, over the two calendar years of 2009 and 2010, the all-rounder had the highest Test batting average for Australia and was named Australian Cricketer of the Year in 2010.

‘Dhoni is an evergreen cricketer, he just doesn’t age’: Shane Watson

Shane Watson

Former Australian opener Shane Watson feels his Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni is an evergreen cricketer and he just doesn’t age.

Shane Watson has been playing for Chennai Super Kings under Dhoni since 2018 and has been a crucial part of the franchise in the last couple of years.

However, MS Dhoni is all set to make a much-awaited return to competitive cricket when IPL 2020 kickstarts in the UAE from September 19 and runs until November 10. Dhoni has not been in competitive action since India’s exit in the 2019 World Cup semi-final.

“MS still loves playing. He is an evergreen cricketer and it feels like he just doesn’t age. Look, with the kind of skills he has and the hard yards he puts in, MS can go on and play into his 40s. MS has been able to manage his body well. The way he is able to run consistently and showcase skills behind the stumps are just incredible. I am a big fan of MS and would want to see him continue playing whether it’s for CSK or internationally,” Watson said.

Shane Watson has won the IPL trophy with CSK in 2018. In last year’s final against Mumbai Indians, the Australian was awarded Man of the Match for his 59-ball 80 that went in vain as CSK lost the title clash in a close battle.

The player further added, “It definitely will. The pitches are going to be on the slower side. We have some high-quality spinners in our side and we should be able to capitalize.”
