Halyna Hutchins’ mother boycotts ‘Rust’ premiere, Criticizes Alec Baldwin

Halyna Hutchins’ mother
  • Halyna Hutchins’ mother announced her boycott of the Rust premiere.
  • The Western is debuting three years after Hutchins was shot on set.
  • A revolver held by Baldwin discharged on a set killing her.

The mother of late cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, Olga Solovey, has announced her boycott of the world premiere of Rust at the Camerimage Film Festival in Torun, Poland, calling it an attempt by Alec Baldwin to “unjustly profit” from her daughter’s death. The Western is debuting three years after Hutchins was fatally shot on set during a rehearsal.

Hutchins, a rising Ukrainian cinematographer and mother, was killed in October 2021 when a revolver held by Baldwin discharged on a set in New Mexico, also injuring director Joel Souza. Baldwin has stated he pulled back the hammer but did not pull the trigger.

“It was always my hope to meet my daughter in Poland to watch her work come alive on screen,” said Solovey in a statement shared by her lawyer. “Unfortunately, that was ripped away from me when Alec Baldwin discharged his gun and killed my daughter.” She added, “Alec Baldwin continues to increase my pain with his refusal to apologise to me and his refusal to take responsibility for her death. Instead, he seeks to unjustly profit from his killing of my daughter.”

The festival has been dedicated to Hutchins, but Solovey remains resolute: “That is the reason why I refuse to attend the festival for the promotion of Rust, especially now when there is still no justice for my daughter.”

While Baldwin’s manslaughter charge was dismissed earlier this year, Solovey is pursuing a civil lawsuit. Meanwhile, the film’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, was sentenced to 18 months in jail for involuntary manslaughter due to negligence, including allowing live ammunition on set.

The Camerimage festival itself has faced controversy, with filmmaker Steve McQueen withdrawing in protest over a sexist editorial by festival founder Marek Żydowicz, who has since apologized.

‘Rust’ premieres at Polish film festival after three years of shooting incident

Rust
  • Rust is set to premiere at the Camerimage film festival in Poland.
  • The film gained notoriety when an incident led to Hutchins’ death.
  • Baldwin faced involuntary manslaughter charges.

The Western film Rust is set to premiere on Wednesday at the Camerimage film festival in Torun, Poland, nearly three years after the tragic on-set shooting that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

The film, starring Alec Baldwin, gained notoriety in 2021 when a rehearsal incident led to Hutchins’ death and injured director Joel Souza. Baldwin, accused of violating basic gun safety rules, faced involuntary manslaughter charges, which were dismissed earlier this year due to withheld evidence.

Hutchins’ mother, Olga Solovey, expressed her refusal to attend the event, stating, “Baldwin continues to increase my pain with his refusal to apologise to me and his refusal to take responsibility for her death.”

Director Joel Souza, who was wounded in the incident, will introduce the film. According to the festival, the screening honors Hutchins’ memory and her vision for Rust to be showcased at Camerimage. Bianca Cline, who completed the film as cinematographer, will also attend, though Baldwin will not.

The tragedy reignited debates about firearm safety on film sets, leading to revised industry guidelines. While Rust tells a fictional tale of accidental death in the Old West, its production became a somber reflection of real-life events, with filming concluding last year in Montana.

Troubles Continue For Alec Baldwin In The Wake Of ‘Rust’ Shooting Incident

Alec Baldwin

Alec Baldwin still faces potential legal troubles in connection with the Rust movie shooting, as there’s a possibility that he could be charged for pulling the trigger of the firearm.

Back in April, the involuntary manslaughter charges against Baldwin were dropped by the New Mexico District Attorney, and he pleaded ‘Not Guilty’ to the charges. Despite Baldwin’s repeated denial of pulling the trigger, a newly obtained forensic report, featured in People Magazine, indicates that the trigger had to be pulled “sufficiently” for the gun to discharge.

Forensic experts Lucien Haag and Mike Haag, appointed by the State of New Mexico for the case, suggest that the incident occurred due to manual retraction of the hammer to a fully rearward and cocked position, followed by the rearward depression of the trigger at some point.

The report highlights, “If the hammer had not been fully retracted to the rear, and were to slip from the handler’s thumb without the trigger depressed, the half-cock or quarter-cock notches in the hammer should have prevented the firing pin from reaching any cartridge in the firing chamber.”

The report further explains that if these safety mechanisms were bypassed, it would result in a noticeably off-center firing pin impression on the cartridge primer.

Baldwin’s legal representation had previously claimed that the revolver had undergone modifications before the incident, but the newly discovered findings contradict these assertions of modifications. The tragic death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the Rust set in October 2021 had a profound impact on the film industry. Hutchins was 42 years old.

During the movie’s filming, Baldwin accidentally discharged a prop gun containing a live round while on the set of the Western film at Bonanza Creek Ranch in New Mexico.

Alec Baldwin has consistently maintained that he did not intentionally pull the trigger of the gun that led to Hutchins’ fatal injury and the injury of director Joel Souza.

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, responsible for overseeing the set’s arms and weapons, faced charges of involuntary manslaughter for her role in the incident.

In June, Gutierrez-Reed was accused of being hungover, potentially contributing to the tragic mishap by loading live ammunition into the revolver used by Baldwin.

Alec Baldwin to continue filming ‘Rust’ after manslaughter charge

Alec Baldwin
  • Alec Baldwin will shortly resume his career.
  • The western movie’s production will pick back up in the spring.
  • Matthew Hutchins will also join the team as an executive producer.

Alec Baldwin will shortly resume his career. After being charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the murder of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, the actor is ready to start filming “Rust.”

Joel Souza, the director who was also hurt in the October 2021 incident, said in a press release obtained by E! News Tuesday, “Though bittersweet, I am grateful that a brilliant and dedicated new production team joining former cast and crew are committed to completing what Halyna and I started.”

“My every effort on this film will be devoted to honouring Halyna’s legacy and making her proud. It is a privilege to see this through on her behalf,” he further said.

The western movie’s production, which was put on hold after Hutchins passed away, will pick back up in the spring. As a result of his October 2022 settlement with Baldwin, Hutchins’ widower, Matthew Hutchins, will also join the team as an executive producer. The new cinematographer is Bianca Cline.

In order to verify that there are no “functioning firearms” or “any sort of ammunition” on set, safety officers Gary Jensen and Paul Jordan of Tenet Production Safety have been recruited to the team, according to the press release.

The statement read, “Live ammunition is — and always was — prohibited on set.”

Baldwin and Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the film’s armourer who handled the weapons on set, were both charged by the New Mexico First Judicial District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies.

If found guilty, Gutierrez-Reed and 64-year-old Baldwin would both receive five-year jail terms.

According to Luke Nikas of the Quinn Emanuel legal firm, “Mr. Baldwin had no reason to believe there was a live bullet in the gun — or anywhere on the movie set,” said Luke Nikas of the Quinn Emanuel law firm. “He relied on the professionals with whom he worked, who assured him the gun did not have live rounds.”

He added, “We will fight these charges, and we will win.”

‘Rust’ armorer says barely checked gun before fatal shooting: police

'I wanted to thank you all': Alec Baldwin thanks supporters

The woman in charge of the gun fatally fired by Alec Baldwin on the set of “Rust” told police she “didn’t really check it too much” immediately before the tragedy.

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, armorer on the low-budget Western, spoke to investigators as they probed how live rounds ended up on the New Mexico film set last month, leading to the death of Halyna Hutchins.

Cinematographer Hutchins was shot and killed as Baldwin rehearsed a scene in which he fires a gun at the camera.

According to an affidavit released Tuesday, Gutierrez-Reed told police she had loaded the Colt .45 with five dummy rounds before a lunch break.

After lunch, the weapon was retrieved from a safe, and Gutierrez-Reed added a final round before handing it to another crew member. Moments later, she heard a gun shot from inside the set.

Gutierrez-Reed said she “didn’t really check it too much” because the weapon had been locked up at lunch.

“We had the gun the whole time before that, and nothing happened, and I wasn’t in there, and they weren’t even supposed to be pulling the hammer back,” she added.

Police seized more than 500 rounds of ammunition from the set, which they believed to be a mix of blanks, dummy rounds and some suspected live ammunition.

On Tuesday, investigators shared new information about the possible origin of live rounds.

Ammunition for the production came from multiple sources, including Seth Kenney, an Arizona weapon rental supplier.

Kenney told investigators he may have passed “reloaded ammunition” to the “Rust” set which matched the logo on a cartridge suspected to have contained the live round that killed Halyna.

“Reloaded ammunition” refers to rounds that are assembled from component parts, not manufactured as complete live rounds.

Gutierrez-Reed’s father Thell Reed, a veteran armorer, said he had provided live ammo to Kenney on a previous film they worked on together that was “not factory made,” and which was never returned.

Prosecutors have refused to rule out criminal charges against any person involved with “Rust,” including Baldwin and Gutierrez-Reed.

The pair are also among those named in at least two civil lawsuits filed by other crew members.

Gutierrez-Reed has said she has “no idea” why live rounds were present, and her lawyers suggested an act of “sabotage” by disgruntled crew members may have caused the tragic shooting.

Reports have emerged of disquiet among staff over allegedly lax safety procedures, and Santa Fe Sheriff Adan Mendoza has spoken of “complacency” on the New Mexico set.

But Baldwin has called the tragedy a “one in a trillion episode” and insisted “Rust” had a “well-oiled crew.”
