Footage has emerged showing Russian soldiers firing thermobaric missiles into the Ukrainian city of Mariupol, proving the illegal use of lethal weapons against civilians.
The videos, released by Russia Today and the Donetsk People’s Republic (DNR), show a TOS-1a ‘Intense Flamethrower system’ unleashing a salvo of rockets into the southern port city, which has already been subjected to heavy shelling for more than a fortnight, resulting in hundreds of casualties.
Dozens of thermobaric weapons were launched, leaving a trail of smoke as they soared into the air towards their helpless civilian targets, while the land around the launcher was set ablaze.
Thermobaric bombs, also known as vacuum bombs or fuel-air bombs, are significantly more lethal than traditional explosives and operate in two stages.
When a thermobaric charge is detonated, the initial blast sprays a fuel vapour cloud in the surrounding region, followed by a second blast that ignites the vapour cloud in the air.
This causes a large explosion, which ignites a high-temperature fireball, sucking up the oxygen in the surrounding area and generating a massive blast wave.
