American actor Richard Gere, 75, strongly criticized President Donald Trump during an awards ceremony in Spain, calling him a “bully” and a “thug.”
At the event, where he received an International Goya Award, Gere expressed concern about the direction of the United States, stating, “We’re in a very dark place in America, where we have a bully, a thug, who’s the president of the United States. But it’s not just in the US, it’s everywhere.”
He also warned that authoritarianism is becoming more widespread globally, adding, “Authoritarianism takes us all over.”
The actor, best known for his roles in Pretty Woman and American Gigolo, was presented the honorary award by Spanish actor Antonio Banderas, who recognized Gere for his outstanding contributions to film and his social activism.
Gere, who is a longtime advocate for refugees and the homeless, took the opportunity to speak out about the dangerous influence of wealth on politics, saying, “The fact that these irresponsible and perhaps dangerously corrosive billionaires are running everything in America right now is a danger for everyone on this planet.”
In addition to his political views, Gere is known for his support of Tibet and his frequent meetings with the Dalai Lama. Recently, he moved to Madrid with his wife Alejandra Silva and their two sons.
