Paediatric experts lauds SIUT’s initiatives for child healthcare

KARACHI: The four-day Paediatric Urology Conference greatly lauded the initiatives taken by Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation(SIUT) in attending to multiple issues and children’s healthcare in the country.

The four day conference-cum-workshop was jointly hosted by SIUT and APAPU (Asia Pacific Association of Paediatric Urologists) and attended by some three hundred urologists, including forty from overseas.

The conference was bifurcated into two parts. The opening two days were dedicated to screenings of live surgeries, which were followed by discussion amongst the participants. The remaining two days of the conference focused on research papers.

Deliberations were based on exchanging experiences which had from their respective countries. Some vital health issues of children in developing countries, including mortality and disability, were discussed in depth.

The highlight of the surgeries that were performed was peculiar in nature, as in three surgical theatres functioned simultaneously.

Renowned surgeons who performed procedures included Prof Philip Ransley from UK, Prof Mark David Leclair from France, Mazen Zeino from Switzerland. Prof Alaa El Ghonemi an Egyptian, but is now a naturalized French surgeon beside prominent citizen Hameed Haroon who has been engaged in various projects of SIUT.

Taking part in the discussion the speakers prioritized the prevailing ailments when they discussed the initiative to reduce mortality and poor growth of children in developing countries. They highlighted the indicators for poor health among children in Pakistan and suggested the need for a holistic approach which included cure and prevention as foremost.

Hameed Haroon underlined the need of creating a livable environment among the 45 per cent children particularly the disadvantage segment which hugely covers the female children living in remote areas. These areas lack many amenities, but health occupies at the top of the list. On this occasion Prof Sajid Sultan Head of the SIUT Paeds Unit presented the history of his department.

SIUT students’ volunteer program enhances community service

SIUT students’ volunteer program enhances community service

KARACHI: The certificate awarding ceremony of the successful participants of SIUT Students Volunteer Program Batches 55 & 56 Summer Session were held at Sindh Institute of Urology & Transplantation (SIUT) at the end of a week – long community service programs carried out by the young generation of Pakistan.

This program, most revered by the students, parents & teachers was initiated by SIUT in 2006 for the students of 9th, 10th, first year, second year and O & A levels of several educational institutions. The program is conducted at SIUT premises during the summer & winter vacations and to date a total of 6655 candidates have completed this well recognized program.

The basic aim of this highly structured & well thought program is to encourage, motivate & impart an insightful training to the participants to perform civic duties & engage in meaningful community services for society at large.

The programs started with orientation sessions, in which the parents were also present, and the participants were informed of the various activities scheduled during the entire week. The complete range of SIUT’s services, its 12 centers located throughout Pakistan, and its various departments were explained.

The philosophy of SIUT was discussed at length, highlighting SIUT’s mission statement of ‘Free Quality Treatment for All with Dignity & Compassion Irrespective Of their Caste, Color, Creed, Gender & Religious Beliefs’.

In the programs, lectures were delivered, especially on personal hygiene/infection control, common psychiatric issues, nursing, diet/nutrition, digital media, robotic surgery, social work, motivational talks, nephrology, urology, organ transplantation, organ donation, biomedical ethics, and pediatric cardiology, amongst others.

There were interactive hands-on sessions on nursing (vital signs measurement training), skills lab simulations of robotic surgery, urology, gastroenterology, CPR/resuscitation and included a visit to robotic surgery theater for viewing of live robotic surgery.

While speaking to the participants, Prof Adib Rizvi, Director & Founder SIUT said that the core principle of community services is based on empathy, compassion and dedication to serve selflessly.

The certificate awarding ceremonies included emotional and candid speeches by the junior & senior volunteers citing the program as a life changing experience.
