Prime Minister Imran Khan has on Thursday (today) directed for early fulfilment of electoral reforms.

Chairing a meeting on the use of electronic voting machines in the electoral process in Islamabad today, Prime Minister Imran Khan was briefed on the use of electronic voting machines in the electoral process.

Minister for Science and Technology Shibli Faraz, Leader of the House in the Senate Senator Dr Shehzad Wasim, Minister for Railways Azam Khan Swati, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Farrukh Habib, and Advisor to the Prime Minister Babar Awan were present during the briefing.

During the meeting, the premier reiterated his commitment to ensure transparency in the electoral process using EVM.

The Prime Minister said the government is also committed in fulfilling all constitutional requirements to ensuring transparency in the general elections in the country.

“Use of EVM is the only option to prevent rigging and ensure transparency in the election process,” he said.

The Prime Minister was given a detailed briefing on the progress made so far about the use of the electronic voting machine and legislation regarding electoral reforms.

“Overseas Pakistanis are an asset of the country, they must be involved in the election process,” he added more.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Chaudhary Fawad Hussain and Adviser on Parliamentary Affairs Babar Awan have on Monday (today) hold a joint press conference in Islamabad.

The government has fixed an electoral reforms agenda to ensure transparency in all kinds of the election process.

Babar Awan, while speaking to media officials said, “The reforms agenda envisages a series of amendments to the constitution and the Election Act 2017.”

He said, “The reforms agenda will be put forth before the stakeholders including the civil society, the media and bar councils and associations for their inputs.”

Awan added that section 94 will be amended to give the right of franchise to overseas Pakistanis.

The Adviser on Parliamentary Affairs stressed that there should also be democracy within the political parties. Therefore, it has been decided to bring an amendment in section 202 under which the political parties having representation of ten thousand members will be able to get themselves registered.

A new section of 213A is also being introduced making it compulsory for the political parties to hold their annual conventions. An amendment in section 15 will provide an opportunity for the candidates to challenge the polling staff.

PM Imran wants electoral voting system following a low turnout in NA-249 by-election

After Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP)’s Qadir Khan Mandokhail won the NA-249 by-election held on Thursday, April 29, ruling party PTI and PML-N have filed a petition in the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for a vote recount, which was dismissed later. 

Prime Minister Imran Khan has on Saturday took to Twitter to comment over the “rigging” claims in the NA-249 by-election. He said that apart from the 1970 election, in every election claims of rigging have raised doubts over the credibility of election results.

He further raised the point that many leaders were demanding the Opposition to cooperate and help reform our present electoral system in order to have transparent election results.

His tweet read, “Trump’s team did everything to dispute 2020 presidential election result; but because the technology used in the electoral process, not one irregularity was found. For a year now we have been asking the Opposition to cooperate with us & help reform our present electoral system.

He also referred to the US Presidential Elections 2020 saying that the technology used for the elections gave out the proper results choosing Joe Biden’s presidency and dismissing Donald Trump.
