Colombo: PM Imran meets Sri Lankan Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa

PM Imran Visits NCA, Expresses Confidence In Pakistan's Nuclear Capability

Prime Minister Imran Khan has on Wednesday held a meeting with the Leader of the Opposition in Sri Lanka, Sajith Premadasa in Colombo.

He expressed gratitude from his party to PM Imran for his important visit to Colombo, Sri Lanka. He conveyed best wishes for the progress and prosperity of Pakistan under PM Imran’s leadership.

On the other hand, the Prime Minister had a meeting with the Pakistani business community attending Pakistan Sri Lanka Trade and Investment Conference 2021.

The business community shared various proposals for enhancement in trade and investment between Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

He also appreciated the proposals of the business community and assured that the Government would take all possible steps to facilitate the traders and investors.

Earlier in the day, PM Imran Khan said that he had an extensive and fruitful discussion with the President of Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapaksa. They both discussed boosting trade ties between the two countries.

While addressing the first Pakistan-Sri Lanka Trade and Investment Conference in Colombo, he said the way forward for the sub-continent is to resolve differences and improve trade relations.

He said our difference is only the Kashmir issue, which should be resolved as per the UN resolutions. He said differences can only be resolved through dialogue.

The Prime Minister said our problems are subservient to trade and investment. Imran Khan said he came to politics with the dream of a welfare state and poverty alleviation.

He said the current Pakistan government has taken a number of steps towards ease of doing business, removing impediments in the way of investment. He said as a result of these measures, Pakistan improved by 28 points in ease of doing business in the world.

The Prime Minister said we can learn from Sri Lanka in tourism. He said Pakistan has enormous potential in tourism, including unique mountains, coastal line and also religious tourism.

Pakistan Sri Lanka MOUs

Prime Minister Imran Khan had on Tuesday arrived in Colombo where he was received by his Sri Lankan counterpart Mahinda Rajapaksa at the airport. Upon his arrival, the Prime Minister inspected the Guard of Honour.

Later, the premier held a one-on-one meeting with his Sri Lankan counterpart Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees. Matters related to mutual interests and bilateral relations came under discussion.

Both the leaders also witnessed the signing of MoUs between Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

The premier also holds key bilateral, high-level meeting with the Sri Lankan Prime Minister and his delegation.

After the important meeting took place, the Sri Lankan PM took to his Twitter handle and updated regarding the key talks with PM Imran.

Several MoUs were also signed today between both nations to put into effect the bilateral discussions that were had. I thank PM Imran Khan, the Government and the people of Pakistan for remaining steadfast friend to SriLanka throughout, particularly in times of great need, he wrote. 

Mahinda Rajapaksa further added, “During our bilateral discussions earlier this evening, Prime Minister Imran Khan and I agreed to work closely towards enhancing our bilateral cooperation in the economic sector and a number of other areas including trade, investment, science, technology, defence and education.”

Furthermore, the Sri Lankan premier said, “We will continue to work together to fight terrorism, religious fundamentalism and extremism. We also agreed to continue with the current mechanism to curb illegal drug trafficking, arms smuggling and other illegal activities by sharing information through the relevant agencies.”

Prime Minister Imran Khan has on Tuesday arrived at Colombo a short while ago where he was received by his Sri Lankan counterpart Mahinda Rajapaksa at the airport.

At the airport, the Prime Minister inspected the Guard of Honour on his arrival.

Later, the premier held a one-on-one meeting with his Sri Lankan counterpart Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees today (Tuesday).

Matters related to mutual interests and bilateral relations came under discussion

During his visit, PM Imran is accompanied by Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Advisor on Commerce and Investment Abdul Razzak Dawood and Special Assistant on Overseas Pakistanis Zulfiqar Bukhari.

During the visit, the Prime Minister will also hold talks with Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

At the high-level talks, the two sides will discuss ways to promote bilateral cooperation in diverse fields, including trade, investment, health, education, agriculture and science and technology.

The Prime Minister will also participate in the Joint Trade and Investment Conference.

Furthermore, Pakistan and Sri Lanka have strong friendly relations since 1948.
