  • Mahira Khan will take on the role of Meena Kumari in Pakeezah.
  • Many well-known names are being considered for the future production.
  • The insider said, “Mahira is on board, but she is just one of many stars we are striving for.”

In a Pakistani version of the popular 1972 film Pakeezah, star performer Mahira Khan will take on the role of Meena Kumari. Hamid Hussain, whose production company, Action Consultancy, is based in the United Arab Emirates, is slated to produce the movie.

Many well-known names are being considered for the future production, even though Khan will be playing Kumari.

Mahira is on board, but she is just one of many stars we are striving for in the remake of this epic, the insider said. More well-known artists are in discussions to appear in the movie.

Leading South Asian actors are managed by Action Consultancy, including Aly, who will play Maymouna in Jemima Goldsmith’s What’s Love Got to Do With It? and Humayun Saeed, who appeared in The Crown and Resident Evil. The company recently diversified its offerings and forayed into funding and packaging foreign content for movies and television shows.

One of the most well-liked Bollywood films ever is Pakeezah. The Indian newspaper Mid-Day reported that Pakeezah required 14 years of commitment. According to a person involved in the film’s production, director Kamal Amrohi would count a day as productive even if only one shot was finished.

One of the most expensive movies produced in the 1970s was regarded as Pakeezah. The project, which cost between INR12.5 million and INR15 million (US$160,000 to US$190,000), was finished and released on February 4th, 1972.

Critics’ reactions to Pakeezah’s premiere were conflicting. The magnum opus received criticism for its narrative and opulence. Nevertheless, after playing in theatres for more than 50 weeks, it was the highest-grossing Indian movie of the year, earning INR60 million (US$750,000). Trade analysts suggested that Kumari’s passing a month after its publication may have contributed to its popularity.

The film garnered nominations for Best Film and Best Director (Amrohi), and N B Kulkarni was given a prize for Best Art Direction at Filmfare. Kumari was also nominated for a special Bengal Film Journalists’ Association Award and won it.

Mahira will star alongside Fawad Khan in Neelofar while still enjoying the popularity of The Legend of Maula Jatt.

Meera will play Meena Kumari in the remake of classic Pakeezah

Meena Kumari
  • Pakistani actor Meera Jee will star in the remake of Pakeezah (1972).
  • She is all set to essay the role played by late actor Meena Kumari.
  • The film was written, directed and produced by Meena’s husband Kamal Amrohi.

Pakeezah will be remade with Pakistani actor Meera Jee in the lead role (1972). She is prepared to portray the part that the late actor Meena Kumari portrayed in the Pakistani version of the legendary Bollywood film Pakeezah. Kamal Amrohi, Meena Kumari’s husband, wrote, directed, and produced the movie. Late legendary actors Ashok Kumar, Raaj Kumar, and Meena Kumari played the key parts in the movie.

I am going to play Pakeezah, 100%, Meera Jee remarked in a discussion She went on to say that the project had been under development for 13 years and that filming would begin in March 2023. She added that the casting process is still under progress and that the film is being made by a US-based production company called Red Lipstick. There were earlier rumors that Mahira Khan, an actor, would play the main character.

Pakeezah, a musical drama directed by Meena Kumari, is probably among the most beautiful movies ever produced in Indian cinema. Kamal Amrohi, who made the movie, started work on it in 1956 but put it on hold because of miscommunications in their personal lives. They both worked together to finish the movie in 1969, despite Meena’s serious illness. She passed away in 1972, nearly a month after the film’s debut, and it went on to become a success.

Amitabh Bachchan discussed how famous director Kamal Amrohi used genuine rose water in all the fountains built up on the Pakeezah sets in 2021. According to Meena’s book Pakeezah by Meghnad Desai, she was paid just Re 1 for her part in the movie.

On August 1, 1933, Meena was born as Mahjabeen Bano to painters Ali Bux and Iqbal Begum. She became the family’s primary provider at a very young age when Ali Bux began taking her to studios when she was only four years old. She has acted in a number of movies, including Piya Ghar Aaja, Sanam, Garib, Vijay, and Baiju Bawra.
