French-Belgian actress Emilie Dequenne has passed away at the age of 43 following a battle with a rare form of cancer. Her family and agent confirmed the news to AFP on Sunday, stating that she died in a hospital just outside Paris.

In October 2023, Dequenne publicly revealed that she had been diagnosed with adrenocortical carcinoma, a rare cancer affecting the adrenal gland. Despite her illness, she remained active in the film industry for as long as possible.

Dequenne first gained international recognition with her role in Rosetta, directed by the Dardenne brothers. Her powerful performance in the film earned her the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival, where Rosetta also secured the prestigious Palme d’Or. Throughout her career, she starred in numerous French-language films, including The Girl on the Train (2009) and Our Children (2012), garnering critical acclaim.

In 2024, Dequenne returned to Cannes to celebrate the 25th anniversary of her breakthrough role and to promote her final film, the English-language disaster movie Survive. Shortly after, her health declined, and she was forced to step away from acting.

Her legacy as a talented actress and her contributions to cinema will be remembered by fans and colleagues worldwide.
