‘Squid Game’, Alec Baldwin among top Google searches

Squid Game

Google revealed on Wednesday that its most popular search terms in 2021 range from Squid Game, Alec Baldwin and the cryptocurrency Dogecoin.

Sports were also big on the platform: the top eight search terms had to do with cricket, the NBA and international football tournaments like Euro 2021, Google said.

The wildly popular and uber violent Netflix series Squid Game, a South Korean-made survival game about people desperate to get out of debt, came in ninth position.

The American actor Baldwin, who accidentally killed a cinematographer on the set of a film in October with a loaded gun, was the most frequently looked-up personality on Google.

He beat out Kyle Rittenhouse, the young American recently acquitted in the shooting deaths of two people during an anti-racism demonstration in Wisconsin in 2020.

Woman blocks 4,000 callers after her number was accidentally featured in ‘Squid Game’

Netflix has said that it will remove a phone number from its blockbuster series Squid Game after a woman claimed she was bombarded with calls to her cellphone.

In the violent South Korean drama, cash-strapped contestants are asked to call a phone number to play life-or-death children’s games in exchange for money.

The woman claimed that the number had been forwarded to her phone and that she had been bombarded with demands to play.

The businesswoman from Seongju, south-east South Korea, told local media that she had been receiving thousands of texts and calls to her phone “to the point that it’s hard for me to go on with daily life. This is a number that I’ve been using for more than ten years, so I’m quite taken aback. There are more than 4,000 numbers that I’ve had to block from my phone,” she said.

Squid Game: Who would you cast if there was a Pakistani version of the drama series?

Squid Game Pakistani version

As the hit South Korean drama series Squid Game has become Netflix’s biggest original series and has gained immense appreciation and praise in order to become a global sensation.

Squid Game has drawn more than 111 million fans since its debut less than four weeks ago, especially the role played by Anupam Tripathi, an Indian actor, who portrayed Ali Abdul — a struggling factory worker from Pakistan who’s fighting for his life and family.

As Pakistanis were very much happy to see some positive and prominent representation of them worldwide, but some celebrities and netizens were not happy with the casting. Despite the fact that Tripathi does complete justice to Ali Abdul, few people felt the actor playing the role should have been Pakistani.

Some social media users even suggested a Pakistani version of the popular drama series with their own choice of actors performing the relevant characters.

Also, there is a polling session going viral online to know which actor would be chosen by the public from Squid Game’s characters.

Pakistanis want to know which actor or actress will showcase the relevant character of Joon-Ho, Sang-Woo, Ali Abdul, Sae-Byeok and Gi-Hun. The decisions are completely up to the audience to cast any actor of their choice.

It is pertinent to mention here that the victory of Squid Game increases South Korea’s increasingly outsized influence on global popular culture.

Netflix offers Squid Game in both dubbed and subtitled versions in multiple languages, increasing its potential viewers.

In February, the world’s most popular streaming platform announced plans to spend $500 million this year alone on series and films produced in South Korea.
