Mountaineers progress delayed due to extreme weather conditions at K2

K2 weather
  • K2 records bad weather conditions.
  • Mountaineers are still waiting for the weather to improve.
  • French mountaineer claims to be stuck after becoming ill on Broad Peak.

Mountaineers who planned to go for the summit on Thursday have seen their progress delayed by extreme weather conditions above higher camps on K2.

Several climbers, notably Abdul Joshi of Hunza, were forced to abandon their summit aspirations, but the majority are still steadfast and anxious to attempt the summit once conditions are improved.

On Camp 4, Naila Kiani, Samina Baig, Wajid Nagri, Steffi Troguet, Sirbaz Ali, and Kristin Harlia are still waiting for the weather to improve and the ropes to be mended.

They will probably try to get the summit on Friday morning.

“Our Fixing team along with other agencies is aiming to fix the line to the summit of K2 by today (21 July), team already below the bottle neck.”

Chhang Dawa Sherpa said, “All other climbing members are steady at camp for summit push. Unstable wind, some gusts, foggy weather and breaking trail over fresh snow is being challenging. However, fixing team is dedicated and working hard.”

Naila Kiani, a female climber from Pakistan who hopes to become the first Pakistani woman to summit K2, and Samina Baig have provided confirmation of her whereabouts and well-being.

She informed, “Weather doesn’t look great, not sure if there will be any summits tonight.”

There are also rumours that an Afghan climber died from extreme altitude illness, but no authority could confirm those rumours.

Sanu Sherpa, a well-known climber from Nepal, has accomplished the rare feat of climbing all 14 8-thousanders twice.

In Pakistan’s GII, the world’s 13th-highest peak at 8035 metres, Sanu Sherpa, 47, completed his double ascent of the 14th 8000-meter peak at around 8:17 a.m. on Thursday.

In his career, he has reached the summit of Mount Everest seven times, as well as Manaslu, Nanga Parbat, Lhotse, and other notable peaks twice each.

Another SOS call came from a French mountaineer from Broad Peak who claimed to be stuck after becoming ill. Local government agencies were planning to rescue.

According to a source, climbers on Broad Peak were forced to abandon their Thursday ascent plans.
