Microsoft vows to challenge government requests for user data

Microsoft

Microsoft vowed to challenge all government requests to access its customers’ information in an effort to address increasing European Union scrutiny on the security of data sent to the United States (US).

The software giant will also compensate users whose information is inappropriately disclosed to government agencies, a blog post said.

Microsoft is one of a number of big tech companies working to continue to legally send data to the US after a landmark EU court judgment in July overturned the primary system used to move information from Europe to the US, called Privacy Shield.

The judges based the decision on concerns that user information was unsafe from prying by American intelligence services.

Companies transferring data to the US using ‘contractual clauses’ — one of the few legal methods remaining — now have to implement extra privacy measures, such as encryption. If companies or regulators deem that customer data is unsafe in the US or any other destination, they may suspend those transfers altogether.

“We believe the new steps we’re announcing today go beyond the law,” Brill said, adding the legal challenges to law enforcement requests would pertain to all governments, not just the US “We hope these additional steps will give our customers added confidence about their data.”

The European Data Protection Board, a body of EU data watchdogs, issued guidance to help companies identify if they need to implement extra measures before transferring their data, such as swapping identifying information with pseudonyms.

Microsoft’s measures announced Thursday come in addition to other commitments the company already builds into contracts it signs with customers, including pledges to encrypt data in transit and at rest, and to comply with legal government demands for data only if they are clearly compelled to do so.

Xbox series: Here are few worthy accessories for your big purchase

Xbox series more accessories

With the Xbox Series X and S around the corner, users might want some fresh and unique accessories to compliment your biggest purchase this year.

Microsoft’s Xbox One wireless controller is also compatible with the new Series X / S consoles. However, the older models lack few interesting features which automatically made the newer one much worthy.

For instance, the revised controller has a dedicated share button for saving clips and screenshots and sharing them online, a USB-C port for charging up Microsoft’s play-and-charge rechargeable battery, along with a few cosmetic and physical improvements to the d-pad and triggers.

Additionally, the new controller also has Bluetooth support so you can easily connect it to your Android phone or PC.

If your PC doesn’t have Bluetooth, you can pick up the Xbox wireless adapter made for Windows 10.

Here we come to discuss about something main, which is storage. The Xbox Series X ships with a 1TB SSD built-in, and the Series S has a 512GB SSD, each offers less storage for games than is advertised.

In the Series S’s case, you’ll only have 364GB of that original amount to use. The Series X’s 1TB drive only actually has 802GB of usable space for games.

In this case, you can buy faster storage to add onto your Series X / S console. Microsoft partnered with Seagate to make proprietary 1TB SSDs that can be inserted into the rear of either console.
