Director James Wan reflects on the Saw franchise as it marks its 20th anniversary, expressing that he “would’ve taken certain things on a different path” had he continued at the helm.

In an interview with PEOPLE, Wan acknowledged the contributions of Lionsgate and subsequent directors who have expanded the franchise. “They’ve all done a great job shepherding this franchise and [continuing] to make as many as they have,” he stated, praising their vision for the series.

While Wan has remained involved as an executive producer and writer from Saw II (2005) to the latest installment, Saw X (2023), he candidly shared his mixed feelings about the original film. “There’s nothing perfect about that film for me… I spent every day fighting for the things that I cannot get,” he explained. Despite this, he recognizes the love fans have for Saw, noting, “But obviously people have loved it… I can now look back through a more rose-tinted glass.”

When asked about returning to direct another Saw film, Wan said, “I would never say never, but it would have to be something extremely special for me to want to step back in.” Currently, he is focused on other projects, including a horror remake of The Creature from the Black Lagoon.
