Ed Sheeran may be one of the most famous singer-songwriters in the world, but Ian Connor, owner of The Roost in Small Heath, claims he can’t draw a pint for toffee.

On Sunday night, the ‘down to earth’ musician joined his pal, Small Heath rapper Jaykae, at the Cattell Road bar to sip Carling pints and unwind. Ed played billiards with the locals after a few jars and led them in a singalong of Serani’s dancehall classic No Games.

When Ed strolled in the door at around 9:30 p.m., Ian, who has been running The Roost with Theresa Kempson for four months, claims he didn’t recognise him. Jaykae explained that he had called ahead to say he was on his way, but he didn’t indicate who he was going with.

The rapper was a frequent at The Roost, as well as the Bordesley Labour Club, which Ian and Theresa ran until it went down.

Ian said: “When we were at Bordesley Labour Club, we put all the games on when England were in Russia for the World Cup and Jaykae would come down for that. I think that’s why he came to us, we’ve got a good relationship with him.

“Ed has done bits and pieces with Jaykae before and they’re good friends. Jay rang and asked me what time we were open to and if he could pop by with a friend.

“He didn’t tell us who it was, just that he wanted us to keep it low key. Jay comes in the pub anyway, on match days and mid-week, and we get on. Next thing you know, he’s walking in with two of his lads, and Ed Sheeran walks in behind him.

“I didn’t even notice, I walked straight past him. It’s only when everyone else started saying ‘Ed Sheeran’s in The Roost!’ that I realised.”

Despite having one of the world’s most famous musicians at his bar, Ian said Ed lacked the arrogance that one might expect from someone with such a large following.

“He was absolutely sound, great to everyone, having a laugh and a joke and a game of pool with the lads,” Ian explained. “He was absolutely brilliant. As good as gold, really down to earth.”
