Govt to reverse policy decision of suspending passport issuance to asylum seekers

ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar chaired a high-level meeting to discuss the matters related to the welfare of overseas Pakistanis wherein it was decided to reverse the policy decision of suspending the issuance of passports to Pakistani nationals seeking asylum abroad.

“The meeting discussed in detail the recent policy decision that was taken vide circular dated 5 June 2024 for not issuing passport to any individual who had sought asylum or already living on asylum abroad. It was decided to reverse the policy decision with immediate effect and to withdraw the circular of 5 June 2024,”.

The meeting was attended by the foreign secretary, interior secretary, Director General of Immigration and Passports (IMPASS) and senior officers of the foreign ministry.

The meeting also discussed the issues relating to delays in the issuance of passports to Pakistanis living abroad.

The interior secretary and Director General of IMPASS briefed the deputy prime minister about the ongoing efforts to streamline the process.

Pakistan banns issuance of passports to asylum seekers

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Interior has decided to introduce a new policy regarding the issuance of passports to Pakistani citizens, who are seeking asylum in foreign countries.

The federal interior ministry announced that the authority will not issue passports to those seeking asylum on political and any other grounds.

The Directorate of Passport and Immigration has banned the issuance of passports of asylum seekers abroad.

Directorate of Passport and Immigration has issued a letter in this regard.

According to the letter, a ban has been imposed on the issuance of passports to those seeking asylum in foreign countries.

According to the post, passports will not be issued to people seeking asylum in foreign countries. It further said the passports held by such individuals will be revoked and will not be renewed.

It has been said in the letter that Pakistanis who have applied for asylum abroad or who have already received asylum abroad, will not be issued passports.
