JSMU VC formed committee to probe MDCAT paper leak

KARACHI: The Vice Chancellor of Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU), Prof Amjad Siraj Memon, has formed a committee to investigate the allegations of paper leak at the MDCAT 2023 exam, which was held on September 10, 2023.

Dr. Azam Khan, Registrar of JSMU, will be the secretary of the committee, which will comprise Prof Syed Masroor Ahmed, Dean of the Faculty of Medical and Allied Sciences at JSMU;  Maula Bakhsh Shaikh, Additional Secretary of the Health Department of the Government of Sindh; Aleem Uddin from the PMDC Regional Office in Karachi; and one nomination from the Director of FIA Cyber Crime, not below the rank of 17 grade.

The committee will hold its first meeting immediately after its formation and submit its report to the higher authorities within one week of the meeting, along with the minutes.

The formation of the committee comes after several students alleged that the MDCAT paper had been leaked prior to the exam. The allegations have been denied by the authorities, but the committee has been formed to investigate the matter and ensure that the exam was conducted fairly.

The Vice Chancellor has assured the students that the committee will conduct a thorough investigation.

KARACHI: Chairman of Higher Education Commission(HEC) Sindh Prof Syed Mohammad Tariq Rafi has said that the institutions can be set on the path of development only by giving them autonomy, there should be no external interference in institutions.

He was addressing the guests at the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Sindh Medical College-Jinnah Sindh Medical University.

Speaking as the chief guest in the panel discussion titled “Role of SMC Graduates towards Community” on the second day of Golden Jubilee celebrations, Prof Rafi said that ever since its inception, the Sindh Medical College has seen a lot of hardships which were resolved only through the team effort and immense loyalty of its faculty and staff. “Three things make an institution: dedicated faculty, competent administration team, and autonomy,’ Prof Rafi said.

He stressed that the vice chancellors of universities need to be trusted more and allowed more freedom and autonomy to take their institutions forward.

He acknowledged and appreciated the essential role of the former President Asif Ali Zardari in declaring SMC a university keeping his promise made to the alumni earlier.

Jinnah Sindh Medical University’s Vice Chancellor Prof Amjad Siraj Memon in his address appreciated the services of JSMU Founding Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Tariq Rafi and said that the former heads and alumni of our university are shining stars of their respective fields.

He announced that the University is starting its first batch of PhD in Dental Health Sciences from this year, for which 12 successful candidates of the first batch had been selected.

Later on, a panel discussion was hosted by SMC Alumnus and prominent TV anchor Dr Shahid Iqbal Danish alongside the main organizer Director CME Dr Rahat Naz. Pakistan Medical and Dental Council’s President Prof Naushad Ahmed Sheikh, Col. Dr Khalid Rafi, former IG Dr Mushtaq Mehar, CEO of Pakistan Steel Mills Dr Saifuddin Junejo, Director Indus Hospital Dr Yahya Chawla, Dr Shahid Sami, Dr Syed Mahfooz Alam, Dr Zaki, Dr Qaiser Sajjad, Dr Javed Mushtaq, Dr Jabbar Khattak, Dr Nighat Misbah, Dr Shafqat Abbasi and other SMC alumni narrated their own stories associated with SMC and highlighted the role and importance of SMC in achieving prominence in their respective fields. Rich tributes were paid to former professors and principals like Professor KashfudDuja, Professor Sultan Farooqui, Professor Khwaja Moinuddin among others.
