S.Africa strikes deal to free fruit stranded at EU ports

S.Africa strikes deal to free fruit

South Africa said Thursday it had struck a deal to clear tonnes of oranges stuck at European ports amid a trade dispute with the European Union that growers say has cost them millions of dollars.

The temporary agreement will bring some relief to South Africa’s almost $2-billion citrus industry, but a trade group warned it would not resolve the underlying threat to their business.

“The current impasse has cost local citrus growers over 200-million-rand ($12 million) in losses,” said Deon Joubert of South Africa’s Citrus Growers’ Association (CGA).

South Africa, the world’s second-largest exporter of fresh citrus after Spain, filed a complaint with the World Trade Organisation (WTO) last month after the EU introduced new safety requirements on citrus imports.

The rules, which aim at tackling the spread of a pest called the false codling moth, require South African farmers to apply extreme cold treatment to all Europe-bound oranges.

But when the regulations came into force in July, ships carrying more than 1,000 containers of fruit were already at sea, forcing them to be held up on arrival, said the CGA.

The cargo either had not had the cold treatment, or did not have the right documentation if it had been treated.

On Thursday, Pretoria said it had issued new documents for shipments that already met the new EU criteria, allowing for more than 300 containers to clear border controls, with more expected to follow.

South Africa’s agriculture ministry said that under the interim pact with the EU, shipments that do not comply with the new measures can undergo cold treatment upon arrival, something the CGA said was not particularly helpful.

“Growers will more than likely also receive half their expected returns on any fruit that is released, due to the fact that most containers have been standing for a few weeks,” said Joubert.

South African farmers say the new EU rules are unnecessary as their country already has its own, more targeted, way of preventing infestation.

Migrants targeted in South Africa after gang rape outrage

  • Locals in Kagiso, near Johannesburg, set fire to the homes of migrants they suspect are working illegally. Miners were implicated in the gang rape of eight women last week.
  • Police used stun grenades and rubber bullets to disperse enraged mobs who were pursuing them with gardening tools. A group of ladies between the ages of 19 and 35 were allegedly recording a music video near an abandoned mine when they were ambushed and raped by hundreds of individuals.
  • 22 males who had been the targets of the violence were held by the police, possibly to stop them from being lynched.

The homes of migrants who they suspect are working illegally in abandoned local mines have been set on fire by residents of a South African township close to Johannesburg.

After a sizable number of miners were implicated in the gang rape of eight women last week, there was tremendous outrage.

Police have detained dozens of people in relation to the assault, but no one has been accused of rape.

Poverty has contributed to xenophobic attacks in recent years.

Some people hold the mistaken or correct belief that many of their problems are brought on by outsiders.

Locals in Kagiso claim that local criminality is caused by foreign miners, sometimes known as Zama Zamas. Tensions were raised by the sexual assaults that occurred last week in nearby Krugersdorp, and locals demanded a protest.

One local homeowner provided the BBC with the following justification for the protest: “I’m afraid to visit the stores. Our police force is inactive.”

Another woman criticised the migrants for the violent assaults and stated, “Let them stop doing what they are doing.”

On Thursday morning, police used stun grenades and rubber bullets to disperse enraged mobs who were pursuing the miners from the ground and from helicopters.

They were forced to seek protection in abandoned underground mine ventilation shafts by others brandishing gardening tools.

A reporter for the national TV network eNCA reported seeing naked males being led through the neighbourhood before being assaulted.

22 males who had been the targets of the violence were held by the police, possibly to stop them from being lynched.

One person has reportedly been discovered dead, but it’s not clear if the demonstration played any role in the person’s passing.

The township’s main thoroughfares have been blocked off with rocks, debris, and burning tyres.

People in Kagiso are already reporting that they worry about nighttime retaliation attacks.

A group of ladies between the ages of 19 and 35 were allegedly recording a music video near an abandoned mine when they were ambushed and raped by hundreds of individuals last week.

The attack on the women, according to President Cyril Ramaphosa, represents the “ugly and evil side of society.”

There have been several calls for increased prosecution of those responsible for the high rates of sexual violence in the nation.

Following the assault, at least 130 individuals have been apprehended, although many of them are being held on immigration-related charges as well as charges of illegally possessing explosives and firearms.

Before filing rape charges against anybody, the police claim they are awaiting the results of DNA tests.

The majority of the miners, who are from nearby nations, toil in the abandoned mineshafts that surround Johannesburg in hazardous and unregulated conditions.

S.Africa applies for extradition of graft-accused Guptas

South Africa files extradition
  • South Africa files extradition request with United Arab Emirates for Atul and Rajesh Gupta.
  • The brothers are accused of orchestrating industrial-scale corruption in the country.
  • They are alleged to have colluded with former president Jacob Zuma to siphon off state assets.

South Africa said on Monday it had formally filed a request with the United Arab Emirates to extradite two brothers accused of orchestrating industrial-scale corruption in the country.

Business tycoons Atul and Rajesh Gupta were held in Dubai last month on suspicion of fraud and money laundering.

They are alleged to have colluded with former president Jacob Zuma to siphon off state assets from Africa’s most advanced economy.

“We can confirm that the extradition request has been duly submitted to the UAE central authority today,” Justice Minister Ronald Lamola told a press conference.

The request is the first step in a process that experts have warned could take years.

South Africa’s case centres on an alleged 25-million-rand ($1.6-million) fraud linked to an agricultural feasibility study — small fry compared to the scale of other allegations facing the family.

Lamola said the alleged study scam is heading for South Africa’s High Court, with a provisional trial date set for January 2023.

The ultra-wealthy brothers ran a sprawling family business empire in South Africa for more than two decades after migrating from India.

Their arrests followed the inking of an extradition treaty between Pretoria and the UAE.

The pair fled to the emirate in 2018 at the start of an anti-corruption push.

An investigation found that they paid bribes for state contracts and wielded influence over ministerial appointments in a scandal that tainted Zuma’s administration and eventually forced him from office.

South Africa World Cup dreams take major hit

South Africa World Cup dreams
  • The upcoming cricket summer is already too packed, according to Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley.
  • South Africa will be replaced by a three-Test series in Melbourne and Sydney.
  • Cricket Australia is ninth in the Super League standings with 70 points from 12 games played.

The Proteas’ withdrawal from the three-match ODI series in Australia in January has hurt South Africa’s prospects of securing automatic qualification for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

With just the top eight teams earning a spot in the 50-over competition in India the following year, the Proteas now occupy a perilous 11th spot in the Super League standings.

The Proteas requested that the games be moved so that the series would not conflict with their new domestic T20 competition. The three-match series in Australia was initially planned to begin in mid-January of the following year.

The upcoming cricket summer is already too packed, according to Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley, therefore more dates haven’t been able to be set.

Cricket South Africa won’t be able to play in the ODI series in January, he said, which was regrettable.

“Having said that, we are excited to welcome South Africa for the three-match Test series, which includes the Boxing Day and New Year’s Day Tests, as well as for the extensive international cricket schedule that will be played around Australia this summer.”

“The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, a record six touring teams for the Men’s and Women’s international series, the 12th BBL season, and the 8th WBBL season will all be included in this.”

“We are eager to welcome back cricket enthusiasts this summer.”

Cricket South Africa (CSA) Chief Executive Officer Pholetsi Moseki emphasized the significance of having all of their local players available for the new domestic T20 competition despite his disappointment that fresh dates for the series could not be secured.

“The CSA is always committed to upholding its bilateral agreements. Even while CSA is dedicated to upholding its obligations under the Future Tours Program, there may occasionally be unforeseeable events that would compromise this determination. With regard to the Australia tour, CSA contacted its counterpart months ago to reschedule the tour to times that would work for both parties.”

“The CSA provided four alternatives in that regard. Unfortunately, none of them were acceptable to Cricket Australia, much to our disappointment “explained Moseki.

“CSA has approved giving Australia the competition points from the ICC. While we are disappointed that we lost these important points, we are optimistic that our strong Proteas squad will earn enough points in the upcoming matches to guarantee automatic qualifying to the championship match in India next year.”

“Even though the CSA has found it difficult to make this choice, the future viability of our new T20 League depends on having all of our local players available for this intriguing new event on the CSA calendar.”

In the three-Test series, which includes the Boxing Day and New Year’s Tests in Melbourne and Sydney, “CSA is looking forward to being hosted by Cricket Australia for an appealing blend of cricket.”

Prior to the end of the Super League season, South Africa has ODI series against England and India scheduled. They may also face the challenge of the Cricket World Cup Qualifier in order to advance to the main event the following year.

With 70 points from 12 games, Australia is presently ninth in the Super League standings. Their next encounter is a three-match series against Zimbabwe that will start at the end of the next month.
