Immigration accounts for more than one million of Canada’s population growth

Canada immigration
  • The country’s population grew from 38,516,138 to 39,566,248 people.
  • Migration accounted for over 96% of population growth.
  • The country welcomed 437,000 immigrants in 2022.

Canada’s population grew by over a million people for the first time ever last year, the government has said.

According to Statistics Canada, the country’s population grew from 38,516,138 to 39,566,248 people.

It was also the year with the highest annual population growth rate in Canada since 1957, at 2.7%.

According to Statistics Canada, the growth was fueled in part by the government’s efforts to recruit migrants to the country in order to alleviate labor shortages.

But, the increased number of permanent and temporary immigrants may “provide extra issues for some regions of the country in terms of housing, infrastructure and transportation, and population service delivery,” according to the agency.

Migration accounted for over 96% of population growth, according to Statistics Canada.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has made efforts to bring in more immigrants. The administration unveiled a goal last year to welcome 500,000 immigrants each year by 2025.

The Canadian government has also accepted refugees from wars such as the Ukrainian war, the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, and the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria in 2023.

According to the government, the country welcomed 437,000 immigrants in 2022, while the number of non-permanent residents climbed by 607,782, resulting in a “record-breaking year for the processing of immigration applications.”

As per Statistics Canada, the population rise places Canada first among the 38 member nations of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in terms of population growth in 2022, and it is also the fastest-growing G7 country.

According to the Canadian government, if Canada maintains the current 2.7% annual growth rate, its population will double in 26 years.

Turkey, Syria earthquake: Canada open doors to immigrants

Canada
  • Canada moved on Saturday to simplify immigration for Turkish and Syrian citizens.
  • On February 6, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake killed over 45,000 people in Turkey.
  • Thousands more were killed in neighboring Syria.

A month after an earthquake in both nations killed more than 50,000 people, Canada moved on Saturday to simplify immigration for Turkish and Syrian citizens already in the country.

On February 6, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake killed over 45,000 people in Turkey and thousands more in neighboring Syria, destroying hundreds of thousands of structures.

“Canada is committed to providing relief to those impacted by the devastating earthquakes in Turkiye and Syria,” said Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship.

People from certain nations, for example, would be able to apply for work permits, which would allow them to work for any business for a set length of time.

“Today we are introducing new measures that make it easier for Turkish and Syrian nationals to extend their stay in Canada and be with their families while continuing to work and study in a safe environment,” Fraser added.

The announcement comes ten days after the UN urged the international community to expedite the relocation of Syrian refugees from earthquake-affected areas in Turkey.

Canada: A truck strucks pedestrians, killing two people

Canada
  • The car’s 38-year-old local driver was taken into custody.
  • The incident’s intentionality is currently being investigated by investigators.
  • It happens barely one month after a bus driver plowed into a Montreal daycare center, killing two kids.

In the Canadian village of Amqui, Quebec, a pick-up vehicle struck some pedestrians, resulting in two fatalities and nine injuries.

After handing himself into authorities, the car’s 38-year-old local driver was taken into custody.

The incident’s intentionality is currently being investigated by investigators.

It happens barely one month after a bus driver plowed into a Montreal daycare center, killing two kids.

Around 15:00 (19:00 GMT), police were summoned to the most recent incident in response to reports of a van colliding with pedestrians.

A man in his 70s and another man in his 60s are believed to have been killed. Children are among the injured being treated at the nearby hospital, according to Canadian media reports.

‘Tragedy is tragic’

A local Amqui businessman was quoted by the Quebec newspaper Le Devoir as saying: “Amqui is a tiny town. This local tragedy is tragic.” A witness claimed to have seen the truck pick up speed as it drew near the sidewalk users.

According to Quebec police spokeswoman Helene Saint Pierre, all evidence point to this being a singular incident. She assured reporters that there was just one suspect and no longer any risk in the neighborhood.

Quebec Premier Francois Legault said the incident was “shocking”, while Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Twitter that his heart was with the people of Amqui. “As we learn more about the tragic events that have taken place, I’m keeping everyone affected in my thoughts,” he said.

In February, a bus driver plowed into a crowded daycare, killing two kids and injuring a number of others.

Pierre Ny St-Amand, the defendant who was charged with first-degree murder, is suspected of purposely driving the bus into the daycare during the morning drop-off.
