Dutch Legend Arjen Robben retires for the second time at 37

Arjen Robben

Arjen Robben retired for the first time in 2019 after leaving Bayern Munich; nevertheless, he returned to the game a year later to re-sign with his boyhood club Groningen; unfortunately, Robben’s appearances were limited to only seven due to injury.

“Dear football friends, I have decided to stop my active football career,” he said. “A very difficult choice.”

“I want to thank everyone for all the heart-warming support!”

Robben was one of Europe’s most feared forwards at the time of his peak, and he finished his career with an incredible title haul.

He made his name with Groningen in 2000, then went to PSV two years later, winning the Eredivisie in his first season.

Robben subsequently moved to Chelsea, where he won two Premier League titles, two League Cups, and the FA Cup under Jose Mourinho.

The Dutchman moved to Real Madrid in 2007, winning La Liga in 2008, before joining Bayern Munich a year later, where he would have the most success.

During his time at the Allianz Arena, Robben won eight Bundesliga titles and five German Cups before announcing a short-lived retirement.

Robben got 96 caps for the Netherlands, but despite playing in the 2010 World Cup final, he was unable to bring home any silverware for his country.

Bundesliga to kick off with limited spectators on Friday

Bundesliga

Good news for the fans of the German football league Bundesliga as they are now allowed back into the stadiums when the new season kicks off.

According to the details, in the first match champions, Bayern Munich will be hosting Schalke on Friday.

However, limited numbers of spectators can enjoy the match that is now allowed this weekend after a six-week test phase was agreed.

Germany’s politicians are allowing each stadium to be at 20 percent capacity for the Bundesliga’s 18 clubs, providing the seven-day rate of infection of the coronavirus is lower or equal to 35 per 100,000 inhabitants in the local region.

That means around 15,000 fans could now watch title holders Bayern Munich start the new season on Friday at home to Schalke 04 at the Allianz Arena, in Munich, Bavaria, Germany with a 70,000 seating capacity for international matches and 75,000 for domestic matches.

Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

Fans must wear face masks and stay 1.5m apart, while alcohol is banned and away supporters are not allowed.

Armin Laschet, state premier for Germany’s football hotbed North-Rhine Westphalia in his statement said “Sports events thrive on fans’ support and atmosphere with an audience – this applies to Bundesliga games as well as to amateur sports,”

There was already a test run in the first round of the German Cup last weekend.

Every club has worked on location-specific hygiene concepts that include prevention measures inside the stadium and on the way to the grounds.
