Arab League Chief Slams UN Inaction: Gaza Truce Delay Equals ‘License to Kill’

  • Gheit says the UN’s failure on the Gaza truce gives Israel a “license to kill.”
  • He acknowledges the increase in aid but calls for genuine action.
  • The death toll has reached 20,000 in the Gaza-Israel war.

As stated by Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the UN Security Council’s inability to reach a durable truce in Gaza is tantamount to giving Israel a “license to kill.”

He said that while the Security Council’s decision, which was approved on Friday to increase humanitarian aid to Gaza, was a positive move, it did not fully accomplish the desired outcome of achieving a complete truce in the beleaguered territory.

Beyond “tranquilizers to absorb the international public’s wrath,” genuine and decisive action is required in response to the humanitarian tragedy in Gaza, according to Aboul Gheit.

After a week of vote delays and intense negotiations to avoid the US veto, the UN Security Council approved a toned-down resolution that called for urgent steps to “immediately allow safe, unhindered, and expanded humanitarian access and to create the conditions for a sustainable cessation of hostilities.”

Most of Gaza is in ruins as a result of Israel’s fierce aerial and ground offensive, which has also caused a severe humanitarian crisis in one of the world’s most populous places.

The war was entering its third month when the mounting death toll reached 20,000.
