A well-known chest surgeon, Paolo Macchiarini, faced criticism for being manipulative and committing research fraud. Some of his patients, who had received what were supposed to be life-saving transplants, unfortunately, died.
Benita Alexander, who was engaged to Macchiarini, shared her experiences and trauma in a Netflix series called “Bad Surgeon: Love Under the Knife.” Now, she’s back in the news for criticizing the portrayal of her character, played by Mandy Moore, in the second season of the Peacock TV show “Dr. Death.”
Benita Alexander, an award-winning NBC producer and journalist, fell victim to the deceit of renowned surgeon Paolo Macchiarini. They met in 2013, growing close as Benita relied on him during her ex-husband John Noel’s battle with cancer.
They spent two romantic years together, even getting engaged. Paolo treated Benita to expensive dates and promised a grand future wedding. However, in 2015, she discovered his lies, and he faced accusations of scientific fraud in 2016.

Using her experience, Benita now helps women in similar situations through her podcast, “Benita and the Berracas.” She works as a narrator and producer at Lion Television, contributing to true crime series like “Crimes Gone Viral” and “Road Rage.” She also produced a documentary, “He Lied About Everything,” and has been married twice before. Benita, now spending more time with her 20-year-old daughter, is learning to love again with caution.
The new season of Dr. Death is out on Peacock TV, and Benita Alexander is upset about how she’s portrayed. Mandy Moore plays her in the show, and it examines their relationship closely. Surprisingly, Benita was never contacted by the show’s producers, even though it’s based on the Dr. Death podcast, Miracle Man, where she shared her story.

Benita told the Daily Mail that she hasn’t watched the show yet, but she’s disappointed that she wasn’t involved in the process. She feels the producers took a lot of creative freedom with her character, dramatizing traumatic events she went through, and she finds it concerning.
While she believes Paolo’s crimes should be known, she’s disappointed that people will see a dramatized version of her character and might think it’s the real her, especially since the character is named after her.
