Kairouan incident, three people lost their lives when a part of the historic walls surrounding the Old City collapsed on Saturday.

The incident occurred near the Gate of the Floggers, with a 30-meter section of the wall giving way. Two additional individuals suffered injuries and fractures in the accident.

Officials have initiated an investigation into the incident, speculating that heavy recent rainfall may have played a role. Moez Tria, a spokesperson for the Civil Protection Department, reported that a restricted area has been established to prevent people from walking beneath the unstable part of the wall, which remains at risk of further collapse.

Kairouan, founded in 670 AD, holds significant historical and religious importance as one of North Africa’s holiest cities. It served as the capital of the Muslim world in North Africa for four centuries until Tunis became Tunisia’s political capital in the 12th century. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988, Kairouan boasts landmarks such as the Mosque of the Three Doors, distinguished as the oldest known mosque with a sculpted facade.

Unesco describes the mosque as “an architectural masterpiece that served as a model for several other Maghreban mosques.”
