On Monday, northwest Turkey experienced a moderately strong earthquake, prompting people to flee into the streets out of fear.

Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of injuries or damage. The earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.1, originated in the Sea of Marmara near the town of Gemlik in Bursa province, as reported by the disaster management agency, AFAD.

The quake occurred at 10:42 a.m. local time (07:42 GMT) at a depth of approximately 9 kilometers (5.6 miles).

According to HaberTurk television, the tremor was felt in Istanbul and surrounding areas, leading residents to evacuate homes and offices.

It’s a reminder of the seismic activity in the region, especially following the devastating magnitude 7.8 earthquake in February, which claimed over 50,000 lives in southern and southeastern Turkish provinces and parts of northern Syria.
