- Larry Summers joins OpenAI board.
- OpenAI faces turmoil.
- Summers sees AI as a force for good, still learning about OpenAI.
Lawrence Summers, a former US treasury secretary, has joined the board of artificial intelligence startup OpenAI. Summers said that the company’s work was “extraordinarily important” and that it needed to operate as a “corporation with a conscience.”
Summers’ appointment comes at a time of turmoil for OpenAI. In November, the company’s board fired CEO Sam Altman, but days later reinstated him. Most of the board that fired Altman has stepped down and been replaced with a new slate of directors that includes Summers and former Salesforce co-CEO Bret Taylor.
Summers said that he is still learning about the company and its work, but that he believes AI has the potential to be a powerful force for good. He also said that he stands by his earlier prediction that AI will replace some white-collar jobs.
Summers’ appointment is likely to be seen as a positive development for OpenAI. He is a highly respected figure in the world of economics and technology, and his experience will be valuable as the company charts its course for the future.
