- WHO reaffirms confidence in Gaza health ministry’s death toll reports.
- Gaza health ministry, run by Hamas, states over 11,000 deaths since Israel’s airstrikes.
- Dr. Margaret Harris from WHO emphasizes consistency in global evaluation of health services.
The World Health Organization has once again expressed its confidence in the accuracy of death toll reports from Gaza’s health ministry, which is administered by Hamas.
The ministry claims that over 11,000 people have lost their lives in Gaza since Israel initiated airstrikes in response to the October 7 Hamas attacks, which resulted in approximately 1,200 casualties in Israel.
In a recent statement to the media, a WHO spokesperson emphasized that the Gaza health ministry’s reporting is consistent with the evaluation process applied to health services globally by the WHO.
“We are confident of the numbers,” Dr Margaret Harris said. “Right now, with such chaos and so much loss of life, any numbers we are hearing will not reflect anything more than a trend.”
Harris restated the WHO’s call for a ceasefire and continuous humanitarian access to Gaza, characterizing the conditions in the region as “horrifying.”
