Chilean authorities are launching an investigation into a tragic fire that took place at a migrant settlement in the city of Coronel in southern Chile, resulting in the deaths of 14 Venezuelans, including eight children.

The exact cause of the fire remains unknown, but officials are exploring the possibility that a heating unit might have overheated.

The affected settlement was home to three families living in two houses that were destroyed by the blaze.

Coronel’s deputy mayor, Javier Valencia, expressed concern over the increasing construction of unauthorized housing, referred to as “encampments” in Chile, in areas susceptible to forest fires.

Coronel is particularly prone to such fires, given the high temperatures typical of the southern hemisphere summer. Tens of thousands of Venezuelans, seeking refuge from poverty and violence in their home country, are embarking on treacherous journeys to reach Chile, one of the wealthiest nations in South America.

Many migrants undertake perilous border crossings, often on foot from Bolivia or Peru, in challenging conditions.
