During a live broadcast, a radio anchor in the Philippines, known as DJ Johnny Walker (real name Juan Jumalon), was fatally shot inside his home-based studio, as confirmed by the police.
President Marcos Jr condemned the murder of the radio journalist “in the strongest terms”.
Four journalists have been killed since Mr. Marcos Jr took office in June of 2022, the National Union of Journalists in the Philippines said.
“The attack is even more condemnable since it happened at Jumalon’s own home, which also served as the radio station,” the union said.
At approximately 05:30 local time, while Mr. Jumalon was live-streaming on Facebook, an assailant entered the recording booth and shot him. According to local media, citing police sources, the suspect had requested permission to enter Mr. Jumalon
‘s radio booth, claiming to have “important on-air news” to announce.
Law enforcement has reported that they have obtained CCTV footage from the vicinity.
Typically, Mr. Jumalon’s broadcasts are streamed on the 94.7 Gold Mega Calamba FM Facebook page, which boasts an audience of approximately 2,400 followers.
Following the incident, Mr. Jumalon’s wife promptly rushed him to the hospital, but sadly, he was declared dead upon arrival by the attending physicians.
Police have stated that they were unaware of any prior threats to his life.
The president posted on X that he has instructed the police to conduct “a thorough investigation to swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice.”
According to Freedom House, a US-based organization, the Philippines ranks among the most perilous locations globally for journalists.
