- Moussa Dadis Camara freed from prison by armed group
- Fugitives on trial for 2009 protest deaths
- Guinea’s borders closed in search for escapees
Former Guinea military leader, Moussa Dadis Camara, was freed from prison by an armed group, according to the country’s justice minister.
The jailbreak occurred in Conakry, with Camara and three others escaping; one of them has since been located.
These fugitives are on trial for their alleged involvement in the deaths of over 150 people during a 2009 protest.
The authorities have closed Guinea’s borders as they search for the escapees. Justice Minister Charles Alphonse Wright pledged to hold those responsible accountable.
Gunshots were heard in Conakry, and the city center was sealed off, with military presence on the streets.
Among the escapees is Col Claude Pivi, a former government minister accused of being involved in the 2009 Conakry stadium massacre. Camara, Col Pivi, and other officials facing charges have all denied the allegations.
Camara, who took power in 2008 and later fled the country after the Conakry incident, returned to Guinea in September 2022 to face justice.
Guinea is presently under military rule, part of a trend of coups in former French colonies in West and Central Africa, with the most recent one in 2021 led by Col Mamady Doumbouya, a former French soldier who assumed the presidency.
